Why I LOVE Beachbody

Why I LOVE Beachbody

Beachbody

Beachbody

I knew I needed to do something.  I had no idea where to start with fitness but I knew I needed to do something.  I had no intention of falling in love with Beachbody when I started dating P90X.  But, this is how it went.  I decided to date P90X with no real commitment.  I knew I had to do it to make it work, but I also knew there was a 30 day money back guarantee if it didn’t work out like I hoped.  Then, as I dated P90X, I began to love the results I had and I fell in love with the program.  It all made sense to me and my body was responding to the changes.  Over the first 90 days, I lost a little over 40 lbs.  I still had a bunch to go and I knew it wouldn’t happen overnight.  I not only lost fat but I could tell I was putting on muscle.  For the first time in over 15 years I was jazzed and I mean really JAZZED about something I was doing.  During that time, I found out there was not only P90X and the Recovery Drink and protein bars and supplements and all of that, but there was also something else that I had found.  There was an entire COMMUNITY of Beachbody folks out there that were on the journey to fitness.  When I say journey, that is what it was for me.  Also, if you talk to anyone who is where you want to be, you find out it takes time and effort and a lot of mental discipline to stay there.  For instance, Baseball or Football Players, or any professional athlete or musician or anyone who reaches their dreams and hits the pinnacle of their industry has to WORK to stay there.  There is really no such thing as “resting on your laurels” and the moment you hit cruise control, you find out there is someone out there younger and stronger who is willing to work harder who wants to be where you are.  It’s the same with your body.  The moment you hit cruise control and think “I have it now”, that is when you are destined to lose it.  It’s true where you work also.  There are “cruise control” mentality people out there, but they are the ones who sit around, making a decent living, living an “ordinary life” and are basically just waiting to die.

How I fell in Love with the Beachbody Community

Well, it didn’t happen overnight.  I was a little apprehensive about opening up to strangers on the message boards and threads.  Facebook wasn’t as big and popular as it is now.  We didn’t have as many success stories as we have now.  We didn’t have the products we have now like Shakeology, Insanity, Rev Abs, Turbo Fire, Body Beast and all of the new line of supplements.  We basically had the core programs and Recovery Drink, Protein Bars and some vitamins.  But what we did have was a COMMUNITY.  It was the people who made me fall in love with Beachbody.  After I had gone through a couple of months of P90X, I knew I was hooked for life.  I was feeling better already than I had in years and the sweat and hard work was so worth it.  I read where MJ Durkin talked about a farmer and a dog.  The dog was sitting on the farmer’s front porch.  The dog was howling.  Another man asked the farmer what was wrong with the dog.  The farmer told him the dog was sitting a nail.  The man asked him why he didn’t get up and move.  The farmer told him it wasn’t hurting bad enough yet.  The bottom line is, when it hurts bad enough, you will move, until then, you sit around and complain about it.  When the pain to stay the same is greater than the pain to change, you will change.  I was ready.  I was tired of being fat and unhealthy.  P90X came along at the right time for me.  The community was there to support and challenge me and absolutely fell head over heels in love with Beachbody LONG before I became a Coach.

Why I am still in Love with Beachbody

I have met so many people along the way.  I wanted to be a Coach before I found out you could make money doing it.  Then, I almost didn’t do it because it was Network Marketing and I said I’d rather have my toenails pulled out before I did that again (I was in another one in the early and mid 90s that didn’t work out so well), but the more I realized the Network was set up as a support system, just like the community was, it made sense.  Beachbody was wildly successful without me and would have made more money short term by going to retail stores, but then the people who purchased the products would never have the opportunity to fall in love with the community like I did.  What we have here is absolutely incredible.  Not only do we have the best at home fitness programs EVER, but we also have the best nutritional shake EVER in Shakeology, we have the best community of online folks for fitness EVER, and we get to use the branding to share with people and Beachbody compensates us to do it.  I am now a full time Beachbody Coach and I am LOVING it.  I am sitting here right now, writing this for you, and not having to worry about getting laid off or dealing with employees or making payroll and, the worse the economy gets, the more I know I am in the right place at the right time for the right reasons.  Come join us.  We need good people to help us end the trend of obesity.  Are you ready to fall in love?  If so, contact me and let’s get you started.

P90X – What to Expect

P90X – What to Expect

P90X Challenge Pack

P90X Challenge Pack

If you haven’t heard of P90X by now, you are truly living under a rock.  The infomercials have been running now for several years now.  You have heard me say that I hadn’t worked out seriously in about 15 years when I saw the P90X Infomercial.  I saw it and it made sense to me, but, I knew it was Extreme (that is what the X stands for).  I knew if I ordered it that I would have to be committed to it.  I knew it wasn’t something that could just sit in the box and I also knew if I ordered it, I would be vested in it and I would have to do it.  A know several people who got burned copies from friends and because it’s free, they weren’t invested in it and they didn’t do anything with it.  Anyway, when I saw it, I knew it was real, having graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina.  Muscle Confusion to avoid a plateau made perfect sense to me.  I knew people who had been going going to gyms and working out and running on the treadmills and they would lose weight and then plateau, get frustrated and quit and then they were even more unhealthy when the weight came back on.  So, when I saw it I was excited and afraid at the same time, so, I didn’t order it.  I did some research on it online.  This was 2007.  We have many many more success stories than we had then.  So, I pondered it for a week.  The next weekend, I saw the infomercial again and I told my wife “This is what I’ve been talking about.”  She said, “You won’t do it.”  So, I immediately ordered it.  Had she not said that, I may not have ordered it.  But, not only did I order the program, after talking to my coach, I knew I wanted to do it and do it big and do it right and get results, so, I got the P90X Results & Recovery Formula (helps rebuild muscle and keeps you from being so sore), the Meal Replacement Shake (we didn’t have Shakeology back then), Activit Vitamins, the Pullup Bar and I went out and found a set of used Bowflex Selecttech 552 dumbbells.  I was in.  I HAD to do this for not only me, but for my family.  I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and miserable….and fat.

What Equipment will you NEED for P90X?

Well, what I would suggest is getting the P90X Challenge Pack.  The P90X Challenge Pack will come with the Shakeology flavor of your choice (Greenberry, Chocolate, Vegan Chocolate or Vegan Tropical Strawberry – I’m a Chocolate Guy, fyi).  You will also need something for resistance such as bands or dumbbells.  Bands will work fine in the beginning, especially if you haven’t worked out in awhile.  You will also need a place to secure the bands overhead (I don’t recommend a ceiling fan or shower rod) for doing pulldowns that simulate pullups.  So, in the beginning, you can get by with resistance bands and a place to secure them overhead, even over a door will work.  If you REALLY want to get after it like I did, I would HIGHLY suggest getting the Pullup Bar from Beachbody.  It hangs in a standard doorway and doesn’t have to be screwed in if you don’t want it to and a set of dumbbells.  I like the Bowflex Selecttechs and I have the 552s.  They go up to 52.5 lbs and start at 5.  The are PERFECT for P90X.

So, What Can You Expect with P90X?

You can expect the ride of your life.  We all know instinctively that running on a treadmill alone won’t do it and it is hard to stay motivated to workout on your own at home.  I was one of those guys that didn’t think a workout at home was possible off of the TV.  But, I’m telling you.  Something MAGICAL happens when you put in that DVD.  The people on there become your friends and at first, you can’t keep up with them and it’s frustrating.  You get sore.  And then over time, it gets better and then, you start doing more pullups and more pushups than they are doing and you don’t need a chair anymore for pullups and you can make it all the way through without doing pushups from your knees (I know that’s a run-on sentence, but it works for me).  It is so empowering to make it through a 90 day program and know that you did it and then to look in the mirror or your before/after pictures and SEE the changes.  Just WOW!!

So, it is basically set up in three phases.  Each phase has 3 or 4 weeks of working out and then a recovery week.  Also, each week contains elements of resistance, stretching and cardio that will keep your body guessing and not allow it to plateau.  You will be sore.  Expect it.  But, showers with alternating hot and cold water, drinking lots of water, lots of stretching, epsom salt baths, and P90X Results & Recovery Formula will help.  If you can, get a massage.  Once those first 2 weeks go by, you will be a little sore during the program, but not as sore as you will be in the first couple of weeks.  Like I said, P90X has been incredible for me and I can’t IMAGINE where I’d be if I hadn’t ordered it.  My suggestion is….do it.  There is a 30 day money back guarantee on everything Beachbody has.  If you think P90X may be a little too intense for you at first, we have other great programs that can ramp you slowly into your fitness journey.  Contact me and I will help you decide which direction to go.  The main thing though, is ….do SOMETHING!!!  Check out my video on beginning my P90X/Beachbody journey!

Is Sleep Important to Fitness?

Is Sleep Important to Fitness?

Sleep

Sleep

We all like to take our Sunday Afternoon Naps, right?  At least I do.  I like to come home, take off my clothes and just jump in the bed and take a serious power nap.  Sometimes with 4 kids from 5 to 17 years old, it isn’t easy to do.  It’s kind of funny that when people talk about getting in shape and getting fit, you will always hear “Exercise More and Eat Less”.  That is absolutely true.  You do need to exercise more and eat less.  But, how often to you hear “Get Rest”?  Do you get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep?  You don’t hear that very often do you?  The third part of that fitness triangle is Sleep.  The truth is, if you are burning calories when you are working out and you are working out hard, you need rest, and not just rest, but you need SLEEP.  So, Exercise, Nutrition, Sleep.  Your body rejuvenates and builds muscle while you sleep.  That is a fact.  But, how often do we neglect it?  It is something that has to be planned for, just like exercising and eating right.  You have to plan a bed time and you have to do that based on when you need to get up.  There are so many things that can interrupt our sleep cycle but it needs to be protected as much as possible, especially when you are training for an event or just plain trying to get in shape and be more fit.  It is something that cannot be neglected or your body won’t perform the way it needs to.

What interferes with Sleep?

Some of these are common sense, but some you may not have thought of lately.  Anxiety is a big cause for lack of sleep and it can be a vicious cycle.  A lack of  sleep can cause anxiety and anxiety can cause a lack of sleep.  Caffeine too close to bed time can obviously interfere.  Exercising within 2 to 3 hours of bedtime.  You ramp yourself up and it could take time to wind down.  Heavy meals can cause indigestion and not allow you to fall asleep fast and get into deep REM sleep.  Alcohol can relax you but studies have shown alcohol before bedtime keeps deeper sleep from happening.  Not having a regular schedule and not going to bed around the same time every night can also confuse you.  It’s a lot more difficult than it was for our ancestors.  The old saying “Early to Bed, Early to Rise, Makes a Man Healthy, Wealthy and Wise” was obviously something they knew about.  They “went to bed with the chickens”.  They had no electricity, no TV and nothing really to do after it got dark except go to bed.  We would be wise to follow some of those same patterns.  I actually got 11 hours of sleep Saturday night.  There was nobody here but the 5 year old and me and the downtime was very nice.  I missed everyone else but with no distractions, I took advantage of it and I woke up the next morning feeling GREAT.  Light and noisy conditions can also prevent deep sleep or interrupt REM cycles.

Why is Sleep so Important?

There are so many benefits to sleep and so many harmful things that can happen if you don’t get enough.   As I said earlier, Sleep is not only when you relax and recharge but when our body’s systems reset and rebuild.  It is when muscles heal from working out and get stronger.  Rest, in the form of sleep, is absolutely critical to be able to perform to your highest potential.  The amount of sleep needed for each individual is slightly different, but it averages between 7 and 9 hours.  You should be able to fall soundly asleep around 10 to 15 minutes of laying down and getting still and quiet.  If you are exercising and eating right, sleep should come easily and naturally.   If you are anxious, all three of those, exercise, good nutrition and sleep can help alleviate your anxiousness.  In addition, a lack of sleep has been associated with some very nasty health problems such as heart disease, weight gain, hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes, depression, etc.

What can I do to get Better Sleep?

Here are just a few “Sleep Tips” for you.  Slow down prior to getting into bed.  Stretch.  Lay on the floor and tense and relax your muscles from head to toe.  Breathe DEEPLY from your diaphragm.  Take 10 deep breaths as deeply as you can, hold for 10 to 15 seconds and release as slowly as possible.  Drown out background noise with white noise like a fan or humidifier.  Make the room dark.  Drink a cup of chamomile tea.  Sprinkle some lavender oil on a washcloth and put it inside your pillow case.  Take a warm bath.  Exercise early in the day.  Have a regular bedtime.  Stop worrying.  Get a comfortable bed.

By regulating just a few things in your life, you will get better more consistent sleep and you will wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day!!

Tracy is my New Inspiration

Tracy Before and After

Tracy Before and After

Tracy is my New Inspiration

I made mention of a new friend I met at Chick Fil A the other day who had lost nearly 250 lbs.  I was wrong.  It was 273 lbs.  Her name is Tracy.  She gave me permission to talk about her on my blog.  I’m telling you, this lady is awesome.  She started at 405 and says she has 30 lbs to go.  I think she looks fantastic now.  The more I talk to her the more I’m blown away by her story.  Tracy has a genetic predisposition where her pancreas does not metabolize fat well.  Four years ago, she was in the hospital for 3 months on a morphine drip with the Doctors telling her they might could keep her alive for 2 months, if she was lucky.  Her triglycerides were over 9,000.  She was a ticking time bomb, just waiting to explode.  They called in the family and told them.  She had no idea what to do.  And, the medical community basically told her what I’ve heard so many others say.  They told her she needed to lose weight and figure out a way to eat less than 20 grams of fat per day.  Obviously she was afraid and didn’t know what do to and when she got out of the hospital, she went out to face the world, on her own.  They didn’t recommend anything to her.  Just a wave and “good luck”.  She did what a lot of people do when faced with that situation.  Tracy joined a gym and found a wonderful personal trainer (there are some good ones out there, but there are some crappy ones too).  Her trainer gave her the best advice he could but also told her that she needed to get a nutritionist to help her along.  After going through three nutritionists, she finally found one that she liked that she felt she was getting good advice from.  Tracy said when she was going to her 6th grade graduation, she had to squeeze into a girdle to fit into a size 14 dress.  Right now, after four years of hard work and learning to eat right, Tracy says she weighs less and is smaller than she has ever been as an adult.  She didn’t have her stomach stapled, she didn’t take any kind of funky drugs or any of that.  She knew that it was going to take hard work and eating right.  She knew that she didn’t get to where she was overnight and she knew it wouldn’t come off overnight, but she is absolutely knocking it out of the park, one day at a time.  She knows that she can never go back to eating the way she did and will have to continually workout for the rest of her life.  Why?  Because she knows if she doesn’t, she will end up where she was and she will literally die years before she is supposed to.  Tracy now has many years ahead of her.  The Doctors gave her 2 years and she is now 4 years into this journey and my new friend is truly my new inspiration.  She is incredible.  She is going to medical school now and is studying to be a nutritionist.  She has a radiant smile and is going to affect so many people’s lives in so many incredible ways.  I can’t wait to hear her stories of the people she has helped.  Tracy knows first hand the health problems associated with Obesity.  You can even read about them on WebMD.

Can you lose the weight?

You absolutely can.  We have some similar stories of people we have helped lose weight and get in shape.  It is amazing to see their stories and get the excited e-mails and phone calls from people when they get on the scales and realize they are losing weight, sometimes for the first time in their lives, and to know we are affecting not only them, but generations to come.  There is an old saying that goes “Any fool can count the number of seeds in one apple, but only God can count the number of apples in one seed.”  Melanie and used to watch the transformation stories on TV and now, we get be a pat of them.  When one person loses the weight and gets healthy and adds years to their lives or if nothing else, functionality, it inspires others.  That is one of the reasons I love Beachbody.  They have been in business now for over 15 years and have helped COUNTLESS people lose weight and get in shape, including me.  To think I would still be where I was at nearly 300 lbs if not for P90X, Tony Horton and now Body Beast and Les Mills Combat (and other Beachbody Programs along the way) scares me to death.  To think where I would be now had my wife not said to me “You won’t do it” is just mind blowing.  Shakeology is incredible, the workout programs we have are awesome and the community of people of support is just amazing.  I started for me and now I continue on my journey for others.  You’ve heard me say I hope you get a Beachbody Program and you come along with us on the journey, but if not, do SOMETHING!!  If Tracy can do it, and if I can do it, you can do it too.  You need to do it, not just for you but for the ones you love.  Come along with us and help us End the Trend of Obesity in the United States, Canada and around the world!!

What do I do to get in Shape?

What do I do to get in Shape?

Getting In Shape

Getting in Shape

How do you get in Shape?  You do it.  I mean, it really is that simple.  You’ve heard me say before, Do Something!!  Get up and walk around your chair a couple of times.  Tomorrow walk around the block a couple of times.  Get down on the floor and do some pushups (from your knees if you have to) and some situps (or crunches).  Go out for a bike ride.  If it’s summer or you have access to a heated pool if it’s winter, go for a swim.  Go take a fitness class or sign up for Martial Arts.  Do something.  It doesn’t matter if you have something planned out as a workout regimen right now, the main thing is get active.  Go out to the playground with the kids.  Walk your dog or the neighbor’s if you don’t have one.  Park as far as you can from the store and walk if you have time instead of driving for 30 minutes looking for something close.  Take the stairs.  Instead of having the kids get up and get you a beer from the fridge, you get up and go get yourself a glass of water or almond milk.  I could go on forever and ever about little things you can do that will add up to huge things in the future.  You are where you have chosen to be.  If you have ever shot a gun, you know a small deviation doesn’t mean much if the target is close, but a small deviation will make a HUGE difference if the target is far away.  If you are driving a car and you want to stay in a straight line and you are off 10 degrees, it won’t mean much if you travel 5 feet because you will only be 0.87 feet off of your target.  But if you go 1 mile, you will be 920 feet off of where you intended.  So, small changes now, and being consistent mean big changes down the road.

What does it take to get in Shape?

Wow, that’s like asking “How much does a car cost?”  The answer is, I don’t know.  I don’t know what your goals are.  I don’t know how old you are.  I don’t know how much you weigh.  I can only talk about what is typical and normal on here without knowing more information.  You can buy a car (that runs at least temporarily) for as little as about $500 or you can buy a Bugatti Veyron SuperSport for about $2.4 Million.  There is a big difference in price there, and functionality.  You can workout for 5 minutes a day or you can workout for 2 hours a day.  I can tell you this, if you jump out of the gate and go for 2 hours the first day, you can likely forget days 2 through 5 because you will be too sore or possibly even too broken to workout.  I wouldn’t suggest, and I’m sure most personal trainers and fitness coaches would agree, going out the first day and trying to run a marathon.  If you haven’t run in awhile, expect that if you decide to run a marathon, you will need to train from 40 to 52 weeks.  If you want to go out and run a 5k race, plan on training for at least 2, possibly 3 months.  If you want to compete in a body builders competition, that is going to take a LOT of focused hard core lifting, eating right, supplements and all of that.  If you want to be functional and go out and play with the kids and have a good time and not worry about getting worn out before they do, and maybe lose some weight and get healthy, then, it is something likely moderate and much easier.  So, what does it take to get in shape?  For most people, you can expect to spend about 30 to 45 minutes, maybe an hour a day, working out.  I know…you say “I don’t have time”.  Yes you do.  We ALL have time to do the things we want to do when we really want to do them.  We make time for the important things in life.  When I was working 10 to 12 hours a day at my Engineering job, I was getting up at 5:00 AM to workout and getting done around 6:00 AM so I could leave the house at 6:45  AM so I could be at work at about 7:00 or 7:30 AM.  I don’t know what your schedule is, but you have to figure it out.  It is what you HAVE to do if you want to be functional in life.  I don’t know about you, but I intend to kick old age in the butt.  I don’t want to be the old guy walking around shuffling my feet or getting the power scooter at Wal Mart when I’m 65.  I also don’t want to fall down and break a hip.  So, I work on balance, posture and I stretch.  Stretching is probably one of the most important things you can do to stay young.  Think about how old people get all “drawn up”.  It’s because they aren’t stretching.  More on that later.  I would LOVE for you to get a bunch of Beachbody Products and workout with them at home.  But, the main thing, as I said,  is to do something and learn to eat right.  I will help you!  Contact me and let me know and I will send you some information on what to do, even if you haven’t worked out in years!!

To your Health!!

Why I Workout

Why I  Workout

Body Beast

Body Beast

I’ve already told you I’ll Never be an Underwear Model, right?  So, if I’m not doing it to look great, why do I workout?  Well, the truth is, I wouldn’t mind looking great and I love it when I take off my shirt and I get a double take.  We all like attention, especially when we  know we’ve worked hard and we deserve it, right?  But, that is not the main reason I workout.  The main reason I workout is to feel good.  Let me tell you, working out is HARD.  I do NOT like to do it.  But, for a little aggravation and pain now, I get to feel good all day long.  It’s not just a physical change, but it truly is an emotional, psychological and spiritual change.  When I was weighing nearly 300 lbs, I felt horrible.  I was the fat, fun guy and I hid it well, but I was truly miserable.  The only time I was happy with the way I felt was when I was eating, so, I fed into that and I absolutely did overeat.  I did it all the time.  And, it became a crutch.  Once I found working out can give me some of those same feelings, it was incredible, but it didn’t start out as fun.  In fact, I was sore for nearly two weeks when I first started.  I wanted to quit.  What kept me going?  I had finally reached the point where the pain to change was less than the pain to stay the same.  Seriously.  Check out this video.  I talk about my experience with P90X.

What Benefits do you get from Working Out?

I have heard many people talking about the benefits of working out.  I’ve read up on it.  I’ve also experienced it.  Here is the truth.  A lot of people think they need to workout so they can get benefits way down the road, one day, from working out.  The truth is, you can have benefits from working out, if you haven’t worked out in 15 years and you can have those benefits today.  You get an immediate flood of hormones and enzymes into your body.  I’m not going to go into all the science here, but when you break through that blood brain barrier, you get the basic same flood of endorphins you get after sex or eating a big thick chocolate bar.  So, you have that going for you.  You also reverse some of the effects of aging.  I heard it said once that for every 1 hour of vigorous exercise, you add 2 hours to your life.  I can’t prove that.  However, what I DO know is by working out, you can definitely have a better life because you will be able to keep up with the kids, and you will be able to do things people your age can’t do.  I absolutely LOVE the fact that I’m 47 years old and I can get out on the floor with 15 to 18 year olds in Jujitsu and hang with them doing falls and rolls.  It’s functionality in life that you get.  Over time, as you continue to workout, your clothes will fit better and you won’t be tugging at them every time you stand up (you know what I mean).  By working out you can also decrease blood pressure, insulin dependence, cholesterol medications, etc.  In other words, it will save you money in the long run.  Those are all medical facts that are also easy to research.  The Mayo Clinic has done plenty of research on it.  I met a lady a couple of days ago that had lost nearly 250 lbs and she did it by working out.  No stomach staples, no lipsuction…just working out and eating right.  She says she has 30 lbs to go but she looks great.  One thing she told me is “I would have been dead by now if I didn’t do something”.  It took her four years, but she got there.  You can too, and I can help you.

How do You start Working Out?

Where do you begin?  You start by….starting.  It may be by walking around the block a couple of times a day.  For me, it was seeing an infomercial on TV….and not ordering it.  I was very skeptical.  I had ordered things in the past and I had tried other workout at home programs (think of the 80s) that were either not fun or didn’t give the results they promised.  There were too many gimmicks.  But, having attended a Military School, I knew there was no substitute for hard work.  When I heard Tony Horton talk about P90X and Muscle Confusion and doing what others are not willing to do, it all made sense to me.  I ordered it about a week later.  If you want what others don’t have, you have to be willing to do what others aren’t willing to do.  It really is that simple.  I didn’t know how to eat right, but over time I started to figure that out.  Shakeology  has helped tremendously with that, giving me everything I need for the day in one single glass….and it tastes great.  But what I had to do first was just get up every day, put in that DVD and do my best.  As Tony Horton says, do your best and forget the rest and Rome wasn’t built in a day.  So, it’s one day at a time.  You have to do this, if not for you, for your family.  Contact me and let’s get you started on your journey.

You are Worth It

You are Worth It!

You are Worth It

You are Worth It

You are absolutely worth it.  Here is a startling fact though.  According to Chemical Worth, if you took all of the elements out of your body and sold them, including your tanned hide for leather, you are worth about $5 on the open market.  Pretty sad, right?  That means, this laptop I’m typing on right now is worth about 100 times what my body is worth.  And, the Suburban I drive I paid 8,000 times more for than my body is worth.   And, don’t even get me started on my house.  REALLY?  How about this though.  Would you sell me both of your eyeballs for 1 Million Dollars?  The answer is probably no.  So, what gives?  Who determines worth?  If you answered no to the question about your eyeballs, then you are worth at LEAST a million dollars so you are already a millionaire.  Would you sell your arms and legs….or your liver…or your heart?  Obviously no.  So, what are you worth?  You were created in God’s image.  He thinks you’re priceless.  So, are you worth it?  You bet you’re worth it!  A lot of people discount their worth.  They get beat up by life and they believe what other people say or think about them.  Even worse, they think they think they know what other people think about them so instead of living life loving and trusting other people, they live up to what they think other people think (you may need to read that again).  I heard someone say once, “stop worrying about what other people think about you.  If you knew that they didn’t even think about you as much as you think they do, that would probably bother you more.”  So, stop it!!  What you think about yourself matters and what God thinks about you matters.  I’m not saying you shouldn’t listen to others and take advice from them, but be careful who you take advice from.  Make sure they have your best interests at heart.

Why do we knock ourselves down?

We buy into the lie.  We hear from people that we aren’t good enough.  We see others doing things we’d like to do.  We see them driving nice cars or living in nice homes or living what we think is the perfect lifestyle.  I’ve learned though, that you don’t see what goes on behind closed doors.  I know there are a lot of people who get nice things or live above their means and they are in a TON of debt.  In fact, they are swimming in debt.  The huge round of foreclosures we just went through proves that.  There is another round of foreclosures coming also.  People buy things they can’t afford and they don’t want or need to impress people they don’t even like.  They do these things to try to improve their worth in other people’s minds instead of investing in things that will truly increase their worth, not only financially, but also spiritually, mentally and emotionally.  If we want to increase our worth to ourselves, why don’t we invest in things that will increase our financial worth instead of decreasing it?  And better yet, why don’t we invest in other people?  One of the best ways we can feel better about ourselves and help society and increase our worth is to invest in other people.

So, are you REALLY worth it?

You betcha.  How do I know that?  Because God said so.  He knew me in the womb and formed me for a purpose and He has even told me that He knows the plans for me and that they are plans to prosper and not harm me.  So, how can I not believe it?  He has also told me that my body is a Temple.  So, how am I taking care of that investment He has given to me?  Someone told me once, “this body is only temporary.  Why should I worry about it when I will have a new perfect one in the future?”  My answer….it’s going to be awfully funny if the new one He gives us correlates to the way we treated the first one.  What does it say about me if I’m out of shape?  What does it say about me if I’m overweight?  What does it say about me if I cram nasty crap into my body all of the time instead of eating for fuel?  Are people really going to respect me?  I’m not saying don’t indulge occasionally or enjoy food, but what I’m saying is, you can’t do that every day and expect to have the body you want and feel good about yourself.  I was there.  I was extremely overweight, maybe even obese, and thought I was ok because I didn’t have any major illnesses and could still get around ok.  But, my family has a history of cancer and what I was doing was headed me right down that road on greased rails.  I had to make a change.  I’ve also seen people who say they don’t care what people think, yet, when they stand up they pull at their clothing and worry about how people view them.  The main thing to get out of this is, you are TOTALLY worth it.   I can help you.  I know what it’s like to feel like you aren’t worth it and that you can’t do it.  I get that.  It’s scary.  But, spend a little time on yourself.  Read some good books and work on getting healthy.  Shakeology will give you what you need every single day that your body is craving for nutrition and then do something to get moving and get your body in the shape it wants to be in.  Once you start, you will want to continue, not just for the results, but it’s really what your body wants.  You don’t have to be extreme, although you can, just do something fun that will keep you moving.  Contact me and I will help you.

Positive Affirmation

Positive Affirmation

Positive Affirmation

Positive Affirmation

When you see this picture, do you see a sunrise or a sunset?  Is the glass half full or is it half empty?  You can come up with your own analogies.  Do you have Positive Affirmations in your life?  The bottom line is, we all have our own special way of looking at the world.  It has been developed over time and by our circumstances.  It is also a bit genetic by the way our brain is wired and that is something that can be overcome but only through working at it.  When we are young, we all have a view of the world that follows the Polyanna Principle.    We always think only the best things can happen and we are always positive.  I watch my 5 year old and he has a view of the world that is incredible.  He is always running around and laughing.  He watched “Despicable Me” and now he is confident we are going to be taking a trip to Super Silly Fun Land soon.  It’s amazing how he sees the best in people.  He hugs everybody he sees even if he has never met them before.  I have often looked at him and wondered why I can’t be more like him.  It would be incredible to see the world through his eyes for a few days.  I just look at him and I can’t help but wonder what is going on in his head that makes him be so in love with the world.  So, what happens to us that changes that in us as we get older?  Why do we let life creep in and smack us in the head?

The Positive Attitude Killer

The Positive Attitude Killer is Life.  Life Happens.  It isn’t fun all of the time.  Those huge dreams we have as kids don’t come true.  We find out there is no such place as Super Silly Fun Land.  Those colleges we apply to deny us.  We don’t make the grades we expect to make.  The girl you ask to dance at the bar laughs at you.  You get turned down from that job.  You get laid off.  Someone you love gets a severe illness.  You don’t get the promotion.  You declare bankruptcy.  You get foreclosed on.  You get the idea.  I could go on for DAYS about the rough things life throws at us.  It’s even the little day to day stuff that is so irritating it can make you scream.  It rains on a day you plan an outdoor activity.  You have a flat tire, and your spare is flat.  The TV doesn’t record your favorite show.  You burn dinner.  The kids act up in school and you get a call from the teacher.  I mean, just little every day things can get you so down.  So, the positive little kid that had all the plans for that incredible life slowly slips from the glass half full kid to the glass half empty kid.  The guy that would have seen the picture as a sunrise now sees it as a sunset, or vice versa depending on which one you think is better.  The little kid slowly slips into oblivion as life dumps reality and it keeps piling on.

What is Positive Affirmation

Positive Affirmation is simply that.  It’s affirming the positive.  It is speaking into existence what you want.  It is not being Polyanna and tip toeing through the tulips.  What it is though is simply looking for the positive things in life.  I used to tell my wife “I’m not negative, I’m a realist”.  But, I realized the more I thought about it, that I was being negative.  Positive Thinking doesn’t mean take your spare tire and throw it away because positive thinking will not make you not have that flat tire.  What it WILL do though is allow you to have a great attitude IF/WHEN that flat tire occurs.  I heard Zig Ziglar say once that a Positive Attitude won’t help you do everything, but it will help you do everything BETTER!!  You won’t be a brain surgeon through positive thinking, but you will be a better brain surgeon with a positive attitude than you will with a negative attitude.  So, decide today to have a positive attitude.  That comes about by speaking into existence what you want.  It is simply writing it down and reading every day, several times a day if need be, what you want to happen.  You could write down “I am a great parent and my children love and adore me.  My children make good grades.  I just got that big promotion at work because I’m irreplaceable.  All of my coworkers think I’m great.  I now own my own business and it is growing by leaps and bounds”.  You write down what you want.  Make it positive and make it say what you want your life to be.  It could be more time with the kids.  It could be more time to pray and read the Bible.  It could be more quality time and date nights with your spouse, but write down those positive thoughts and feelings and read them every day and then, make them happen.  You can make them as outrageous as you want.  Think like a child.  Have a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) and be positive about it.  Les Brown said “If you shoot for the moon and miss, at least you land amongst the stars.”  So, be positive.  Have fun.  We only have so many trips in our life around the sun.  Make each one of them count and I can promise you, if nothing else, the ride will be more fun if you are Positive and have Positive Affirmations every day in your life.  One way to dramatically change your outlook on life is to workout every day and get in shape.  We have great Products to help with that along with ShakeologyContact me and let me help you start on your journey to getting your life back in order!!

What is Normal?

What is Normal?

What is Normal

What is Normal

Normal is defined as “Perpendicular to a Tangent at the Point of Tangency”.  WHAT??  I know, I’m a recovering Engineer.   Normal is normal.  Ordinary.  Static.  Boring.  And even, dare I say, at times, Dangerous.  I don’t know if there is such a thing in humanity as “normal”.  Maybe the word should be “typical”.  I have heard so many people say that they want to be normal, or that person isn’t normal or they are behaving abnormally.  So, just what is that anyway?  I think we all tend to look around us and see others and compare ourselves to them and figure that we need to be more like them to fit in.  That is also what we do subconsciously every time we are around people.  If you think about it, you are the “average” of the five people you spend the most time with.  If you look at their behaviors, finances, spiritual condition and other things, “typically” we are the average of them.  The Bible even says “Bad Company Corrupts Good Character” and “Iron Sharpens Iron”.  So, why don’t we pick the people we hang around more carefully?  Do we want to act and be like the people we hang around most?  The fact is that you will typically tend to gravitate to the become like the people you hang around.  It is a lot easier for them to pull you down than for you to bring them up.

Why do we settle for Normal?

Normal is easy.  Normal is the stick floating in the water downstream.  Normal is minimal effort.  Normal is not striving for excellence.  We are all born with a desire to be more than we are.  If you watch kids playing on a playground, they want to be “king of the hill” or build a block tower higher than their friends or go across the monkey bars faster.  We are all built with that competitive fire in us.  But society is now teaching us to settle so that we don’t hurt people’s feelings.  We are made to feel bad about actually reaching for the brass ring and God forbid we actually grab it.  It’s not fair to the other person if we achieve more or have more or really strive to reach a goal that has been placed in front of us.  So why do we let this happen to ourselves and society?   Why do we give a trophy to every kid who participates?  What is wrong with winning?  In a couple of weeks, the 49ers will play the Ravens in the Superbowl.  Tell the losing team they did great and tell the winning team they shouldn’t be proud of their victory.  They will look at you like you’re crazy.  So, why do we allow “normal” to creep into our everyday lives?  It’s because, again, it’s easy.  We can be lazy and be normal.  Everyone else is normal, so, I need to be normal too.  I’m not talking about being stark raving crazy and running down the street naked abnormal (that will get you locked up and nobody wants to see it, especially from me), I’m talking about striving to be the best you can be abnormal.

Normal is everywhere and it is Changing

I heard Darren Hardy, publisher and founding editor of Success Magazine among other things, talk about “set points”.  You have a set point in your life.  It’s a mental image you hold of who you are, how much you weigh, how much money you make, and other things that make you who you ARE.  In other words, if you took a person who was obese and suddenly they woke up and were lean and ripped, it would not be long before they were obese again and if you took someone who was lean and ripped and put 100 lbs on them, it wouldn’t be long before they were lean and ripped again.  It’s the same with someone who has money and someone who does not have money.  Their habits and their set point will not allow them to stay where they are.  They will go back to where their mind tells them they need to be.  In order to change the things in your life you need to change.  Change is hard and not comfortable.  You have to change that WISH into a GOAL.  That doesn’t happen just by changing your behaviors.  That will only work for a short time.  That is one reason why diets typically fail.  You have to change your value system, your beliefs and your set point.  When you do that, your behaviors will change permanently.  So, if nothing else, understand you are where you are because, generally, that is where you’ve chosen to be with the decisions you’ve made.  If you want to change your set point, and become “abnormal”, you need to hang around people who have accomplished some things you want to accomplish.  You need to be reading good things from successful people.  I can give you a great list of books to read and may do that in an upcoming blog.  You can listen to audio presentations of the books or speeches in your car.  You need to pray a bunch and seek God’s will for your life.  You need to hold yourself more accountable.  You were made to be more than you are and that certainly isn’t normal.  Changing the way you view yourself can help you too.  Beachbody has many programs that can change your body and as you change that, you will start to see someone different in the mirror.  The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.  Are you ready to take the challenge?  Contact me and let me help you find out what is NORMAL for you.  Then, you can help others find what is NORMAL for them.  And be ready.  Anytime you stick your head up above the crowd, some jackleg is going to throw tomatoes.

Les Mills Combat Review

Les Mills Combat Review

Les Mills Combat

Les Mills Combat

I was one of the people who had a hard time believing you could get a good workout at home, with little to no equipment.  As I said in my blog Is running bad for you, I thought the only way you could workout at home and get in a good workout was to “go for a run”.  I had also done pushups and situps in college but without a goal in mind, such as preparing for a Physical Fitness Test, it is just hard for me to get motivated to go outside and run and do pushups and situps.  So, it took me awhile to warm up to working out at home.  But, I did and it helped me get in the best shape of my life.  Les Mills Combat has been a great addition to my at home workout regimen.  So, here is what you need to know about Les Mills Combat.  Don’t forget, order it through me and you’ll get me as your coach, and that’s a good thing, right?  The workouts range from about 30 minutes to about 60 minutes so time should be no excuse!

Equipment Needed for Les Mills Combat

A floor and gravity is all you need.  You can do everything required in this program with just your body weight.  The thing I love about Combat is the instructors.  The main instructors, Dan and Rach, are very motivating, funny, and they aren’t hard to look at either.  So, you don’t need anything really, just you showing up and pushing play.  However, if you want to upgrade it, you can get the package where you also get the gloves.  The gloves aren’t weighted but they will fit you like MMA fighting gloves so you really feel like you are in the fight.  It just seems to ramp up the intensity when you have on the gloves and you are “in the fight”.  The only other piece of equipment you may want/need is a set of light dumbbells.  They suggest 5 lbs for beginner, 10 to 15 lbs for intermediate and 20 lbs for advanced.  You will need these in the program Warrior 1, Upper Body Blow Out, but only for a few moves.  These weights are relatively inexpensive to pick up from a local outlet.

You can also upgrade at any time or you can purchase the Ultimate Warrior Package and get the gloves and the other workouts like Warrior 1 Upper Body Blowout, Warrior 2 Lower Body Lean Out, Inner Warrior Stretch & Strength and Core Attack.  This all depends on which package you get.  Most people get the basic package and upgrade when they are ready.  Of course, I recommend the Les Mills Combat Challenge Pack which comes with a 30 day supply of Shakeology, a 30 day free trial of the Club, which gets you nutritional information, trainer tips and other great stuff and also puts you on shakeology home direct so you get it every 30 days.  It’s by far the best value for the money.

My Experience with Les Mills Combat
Me and Rach

Me and Rach

Les Mills Combat is taught in gyms all over the country every week by certified trainers.  There are classes in nearly every major city.  The beautiful thing about it is you can do it at home, without joining a gym and spending all that extra time.  It is a mix of the Martial Arts of Karate, Capoeira, Jujitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, etc.  It is guaranteed to get you sweating fast and keep you sweating for the workout.  It comes with a 60 Day money back guarantee at the time of this posting.  My first experience with Les Mills Combat workout was at a Leadership Event live with Dan and Rach.  I routinely now do the workouts in conjunction with some of our other Beachbody programs and it is also a great workout to compliment my own Martial Arts program of Jujitsu.  I highly recommend getting this workout doing it for a fat blasting workout.  The workouts can be easily modified and there is always someone showing the easy way to modify the movements.  This workout will DEFINITELY have you feeling like an MMA Warrior!!  Just today I did Warrior 2, Lower Body Lean Out and I can tell you, the workout is fun, fast and will make you sweat.  All you need is an attitude to do it and “Stay with the Fight”.  The picture is of Rach and me after a live workout this past September.  Do yourself a favor and get this workout.  It’s AWESOME!!!
