How I Found P90X!!

How I Found P90X

Where I was –

Watch the Video at the end of this blog.  It’s pretty funny….

P90X Challenge Pack

P90X Challenge Pack

Surprisingly, I have had a lot of people ask me about How I Found P90X.  It’s a pretty neat story actually.  I wasn’t really LOOKING for anything.  You’ve heard people say that about dating right?  Well, it was true for me.   I knew I needed to get in shape, but I didn’t know what to do.  I knew I was fat and not healthy at all.  But, I also knew I wouldn’t go to a gym and I wouldn’t use a membership even if someone gave it to me.  I just simply didn’t have time to get up that early and go to the gym, workout for an hour or two, carrying my work clothes to the gym, showering, and then go to work.  I also knew I wouldn’t go to the gym after work and then come home because I simply wouldn’t feel like it.  I didn’t have the equipment I needed at home and didn’t have the room for an at home gym.  I had already decided that if I was going to get in shape, I was going to have to go running and try to eat right.  I had lost weight in the past doing yo-yo diets, but I always gained back more than I lost.  Diets Don’t Work!  I know that now and funny enough, I knew it then.  Instinctively I knew it.  We all do.  But, I didn’t know what to do.  I had convinced myself I was OK.  I was a baseball coach and had no real health problems and I was 42 years old.  I guess I should say, I didn’t have any health problems, yet.  But, I was a ticking time bomb.  My knees and ankles were beginning to hurt from the excess weight I was carrying.  Surely my internal organs were taking a toll as well.  It may have been another decade or more before the problems manifested themselves, but I’m sure they would have.  You can’t continue to mistreat your body like I was doing and not have it show up.  My Father died of Pancreatic Cancer at 68 and I didn’t want that to happen to me.  I’m sure all of the fried foods he ate every day as well as all the sweets and desserts is what did it, or at least contributed to it.  I didn’t want that to happen to me but I didn’t know what to do.  Six years later, that is when it happened, and this is How I Found P90X!!

How I Found P90X!!

As I said, I wasn’t really looking for anything.  I knew I needed to do something but I was stuck.  So, what to do?  I was sitting in my living room watching infomercials one weekend and saw it.  P90X came on.  I watched the entire thing.  So, what did I do?  I did what most people do.  I didn’t order it.  But, I thought about it a lot and, truly, when it comes to working out, it is NOT the thought that counts.  It is action.  The next weekend, after doing a bit of research on it, the infomercial came on again and Melanie happened to be in the room this time.  I told her, THIS is what I was talking about.  She said, in a serious tone, “You won’t do it!”  THAT is when I ordered it.  She basically gave me a challenge without knowing it.  I was assigned a coach and she was awesome for me.  I got the pullup bar, the recovery drink, the meal replacement shakes, the vitamins, the protein bars, etc.  I wanted it all.  I knew I had to invest in it so I did.  THAT is how I found P90X!  I had no idea how much ordering that program and being committed to it would change my life.  It has been nothing short of incredible!

How I Found P90X!!

Where I am now –

As I said, I’m ever so glad I found P90X.  So, that is how I found P90X!  Or, did it find me?  I’m not really sure.  But, after doing 2 Rounds of the 90 day program, P90X+ came out.  That is when I got truly ripped.  P90X will get you ripped in 90 days but I tell everyone, you have to be torn first.  I wasn’t even folded!!  But, P90X+ got me there.  Since then, I’ve done all of the Beachbody Programs.  There are too many of them to name but you can go to my site at www.teambeachbody.com/jayfloyd and see all of them.  If you want to do this and do it seriously, my suggestion is getting the P90X Challenge Pack.   I wish we had it when I got started  but we didn’t even have Shakeology then.  When you get the Challenge Pack, you get your choice of Shakeology Flavor, P90X, free shipping and you’ll get a new order of Shakeology every 30 days.  You’ll also get to test drive the club membership for 30 days to see if you like it.  Everything has a 30 day money back guarantee, no questions asked, so, what do you have to lose?  If you think P90X is a bit too much, we also have P90, the program that is a little less intense than the X.  We also have other workouts you can check out by going to my site and clicking SHOP.  If you have any questions, Contact Me and let’s talk about it and find your soul mate workout.  I’m loving Body Beast right now and you can do it.  I can help you.  Let’s get you in the best shape of your life, regardless of how old you are!!  You may just decide you want to be a coach and help other like I did and then, your life will REALLY change.

Color Outside The Lines

Color Outside The Lines

Color Outside The Lines

Color Outside The Lines

What does that mean to Color Outside the Lines?  I remember when my son started coloring.  He was old enough to hold a crayon but not old enough to have the hand-eye coordination to stay inside the lines of the coloring book.  So, I’d guess you’d say he was “normal”.  Kids typically are like that though aren’t they?  They come home from school or church with a drawing and they are SO proud of it.  The sky is purple, the trees are blue, the bunny rabbits are red.  And they hold it up like they just recreated the Mona Lisa.  We look at it and say, in a condescending voice if we’re not careful, “What is THAT?”  I remember Melanie correcting me and saying you don’t ask a child that.  You need to sit them down and ask them to tell you about their picture.  So, as I sat down with him and asked him, what I thought was a bird in the sky was a cloud.  That red bunny was really a flower.  And, my head was 5 times larger than it should have been on my body that was 5 times smaller than it should have been.  But, to him, it was a masterpiece.  It was exploding with color all over the place.

A bit later, I remember sitting with him and telling him that the sky was blue and handing him a blue crayon.  Trees are green, rabbits are gray, white, brown, etc.  We start to teach our children to NOT Color Outside the Lines.  In a way, we are teaching them that there are rules to follow and lines to not cross.  In a lot of areas of society, that is a GREAT thing.  There ARE lines that should not be crossed.  Some lines, if crossed, can cause physical harm to us or others and other lines are there to protect us and others emotionally and spiritually.  But, as I sit here and write this, I’m wondering how many times have we taught our children to not color outside the lines and it stifles their creativity?  What masterpieces have we missed out on in society because we end up pigeon-holing ourselves and others and tell them to stay inside the lines?

Color Outside The Lines – But Don’t Be Stupid!

I’m not suggesting that you go crazy and start breaking a bunch of laws just to be a rebel and color outside the lines.  I’m simply saying do something outside the norm.  You’ve heard me say before that you need to do something scary that won’t kill you.  There is a lot of energy that is released when you can just let go.  Start knocking some things off of your bucket list.  Do something FUN that no one thinks you will do.  I am actually looking forward to being an older man and acting crazy.  But, I want to be wealthy so people won’t see me as the crazy old fool, but as the eccentric wealthy older gentleman.  I want to color outside the lines for my entire life.  There are so many people who want to be seen as normal that they never step out of the normalcy of life to do something odd or different.  Wear a bright shirt.  Put whitewalls on your car.  Just be different from the crowd.  We all want our children to do the same things and make them like others.  We want our sons to play sports and our daughters to be a ballerina.  We may think it a bit odd if our son wants to major in theater or drama and if our daughter wants to be on the football team.  Indeed it is a bit odd, but they are just being themselves and not worrying about what society or people in general are thinking about them.  Again, I’m not talking about being odd to the point where you intentionally draw attention to yourself to fill a void, such as blasting ear splitting music while driving down the road and sitting at stoplights and disturbing others, but doing something for yourself that is not necessarily the norm.  Get out of your Comfort Zone!!

Color Outside The Lines – Be Yourself!

When you are coloring, if you think the tree should be blue, color it blue.  If you want to color outside the lines, color outside the lines.  I’m speaking metaphorically here.  There are people who don’t understand why I laid down my Engineering Career to be a Full Time Beachbody Coach.  They look at me and wonder how I can just “throw away my education, experience and licenses like that”.  The truth is, this is a lot more fun and I get to help people with every aspect of their lives.  As a person’s Beachbody Coach, I get to help them with marital relationships, children issues, job situations and all of that.  I typically don’t counsel them myself but I can point them to a book I’ve read or a lecture I’ve heard or something.  I’m not smart enough to come up with that stuff on my own, but I can plagiarize with the best of them.  I can use something someone else came up with.  I love surprising people and doing the unexpected also.  I like to make people laugh.  I love it when I see a twinkle in someone’s eyes because I am helping them live life in a non-normal way.  I am actually battling that myself right now because my oldest son doesn’t want to go to The Citadel where I went to college, but is leaning toward a civilian college.  But, I am doing my best to let him find his place in life and let go and not make him do what I think he should do.  I am not going to allow myself to be upset if he decides not to follow in my footsteps.  All I want for him is for him to follow Jesus, live a good life and follow the laws of society and be himself.  The rest is up to him and I hope he continues to color outside of the lines.  I want him to always DREAM BIG!!

Meaning of Life

Meaning of Life

Meaning of Life

Meaning of Life

When I set up my site and decided to start blogging, this was one of the topics I said I wanted to write about.  I made a list of things and this is one of the things I wrote down.  I have skipped it for about a week until now.  This is a tough topic.  I guess what I should have said was, Meaning of LifeFor ME.  There is a lot of stuff out there and many philosophers and scholars have struggled with this since man began to reason it out.  I just know that, the older I get, the more I think about what my life means to me, my children and the people I’m associated with in my life.  In “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything was discovered to be 42.  However, the Ultimate Question remained a mystery.  There are books out there that will tell you the meaning of life is to be happy and just do your thing.  It’s amazing to me that so many people have tried to figure it out for everyone and fallen so short.  Life itself is a mystery.  But it is a mystery to be embraced.  In Ecclesiastes, Solomon struggled with this very issue.  He struggled because he knew life was short and he wondered about the meaning of life with what he had gone through already.  Our Pastor said something a couple of weeks ago I thought was very profound.  He basically said if you struggle with whether something is important or not, if it isn’t important at death, it isn’t important.  I started to reflect on that and the more I thought about it, the more sense it made.  I guess I’m starting to think about this stuff because, being in middle age, if I live a typical lifespan for a man in the United States of 76.2 years, I’m well past the half way point.  So, what is this all about?  What are we doing?  What IS the Meaning of Life?

Meaning of Life – What’s it all about?

I saw one of the most profound statements about life a few years ago and it hit me hard when I thought about and it still does to this day.  There is a sign under a bridge where we go out to go shrimping and it says “You are responsible for your wake”.  When thinking about the Meaning of Life, truer words were never spoken.  How many people go through life and they never really think about what they are doing and the consequences of their actions?     They just go through life and have an all about me type of attitude.  In my mind, those are some of the most miserable people because everything they do is centered around them and their happiness, when true joy is found in making others happy and doing service for others.  As I was typing this, Mother Teresa came to mind.  She spent most of her life in the slums of Calcutta devoted to helping the financially and spiritually poor.  It’s amazing to me too when I think about it.  Doing things for me makes me happy.  But, doing things for my family and for others brings me true joy.  So, doing things for others is, in a strange way, doing things for me.  Strange, right?  Also, for me, I’m a believer and a follower of Jesus Christ.  So, when I focus my energy in that direction, and do things in order to bring other people closer to God, that also brings me joy because I know it brings HIM joy.  God desires true worshipers to worship in Spirit and in Truth.

I have watched so many documentaries from physicists lately about how the universe was created and how the earth was formed.  Most of them take creationism totally out of the picture.  They even say the molecules in our left hand probably came from a different star than the molecules in our right hand and were formed when stars exploded.  They take the stance that the universe is all there is.  There is no creator or intentional design.  It just happened.  When we die we are dead.  So, Eat Drink and Be Merry.  When I ponder the Meaning of Life, I can’t imagine thinking I’m going to die and that’s all there is.  I just have to believe there is something else and that I’m here intentionally for a purpose.  That is what gives me my Meaning of Life.  For me, science and my faith match up perfectly.

Meaning of Life – Day to Day

Meaning of Life

Meaning of Life

When you start thinking of the Meaning of Life, it’s really heady stuff.  You can wrap yourself into so many knots when you start to contemplate why you’re here and what it will all mean when you’re dead.  Will your Great Grandchildren even know your name?  I wrote about that in Leaving a Legacy.  For me, serving God and doing the best I can to set an example for my children in how to live and treat others is priority.  I can’t imagine not having that faith in my life.  I also have other ways I serve people.  I found that life is much more enjoyable now that I’m involved in fitness.  I have more energy and I feel better about myself.  I’ve told people, when you’re in shape and you feel good about how you look, it improves every aspect of your life.  It improved me spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically and now, even financially.  Financially you say?  There are studies that show fit people make more money.  On average about 9%.  Couple that with being a Beachbody Coach where you actually get paid to help people do that and for me, it’s a win win.  I have heard people say, find the thing you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life.  I found it for me.  It’s being a Beachbody Coach and helping people get fit and helping them make money doing it.  If you want help, Contact me and let’s get you started on your fitness journey.  I love helping people!  I have a whole new realm of friends and I now LOVE what I do for a living.  It also frees me up to spend more time with my family and I can really enjoy life and explore the Meaning of Life.  But, if you get nothing else out of this, just remember, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR WAKE!!

Slim in 6 Review

Slim in 6 Review

Slim in 6 Review

Slim in 6 Review

I am not writing this Slim in 6 Review because of something I’ve read.  I’m writing this because, yes, I’ve done Slim in 6.  Slim in 6 is a program that I didn’t think I would like, and seemed a bit hokey.  It seemed like the girl thing to do.  Slim in 6 wasn’t something I really wanted to do but as a Beachbody Coach, I thought I needed to in order to get a feel for the programs so I could either recommend and/or help other people through it.  But, it was kind of like Mikey in the Life Commercial.  I not only liked it, I LOVED it.  And, I still do.  There are times now when I want to switch things up and do a double on a day or something like that and I still will pop in a Slim in 6 DVD and do it.  I have also done the Slim Series but I doubt I do a review on that.  I may one day.  It’s basically just ramped up versions of Slim in 6 though and I highly recommend it.  So, for this Slim in 6 Review, I will focus on the basics of Slim in 6.

Slim in 6 Review – What to Expect

Slim in 6 was filmed in a studio setting that isn’t what you’d expect.  It’s all about working out and real working out though.  For Slim in 6, Debbie Siebers starts you off with lunges and squats and follows it up with more lunges and squats.  The good new is it works.  The bad news is, it hurts, in a good way.  But, everything is modifiable and for me, it was good to know that it was fairly easy on my knees.  In the beginning I couldn’t bend all the way down and didn’t have the flexibility I needed to move the way they do in the videos.  But the more I did it, the more I found myself pushing and getting the most out of it.  The program basically starts with a relatively short 36 minute session of Start It Up.  Once you start feeling good and you can do the program with medium intensity and relative ease, you move on to Ramp It Up which is 57 minutes long.  After a couple of weeks, you should be ready to move on to Burn It Up.  The thing that surprised me is the way she moves you through the exercises.  You start standing and doing lunges and squats and progress to upper body work with resistance bands for upper body muscle tone.  Then, you go to the floor work that hits your glutes, quads and hamstrings in ways you can’t imagine.  I tell people, Slim in 6 makes my eyeballs sweat because men don’t cry.  It’s tough.  What’s funny though is, she does it in a way that’s enjoyable, as sick as that sounds.  It’s great when you can push through all of the floor work.  Even though it felt like you could fry an egg on my butt, once I pushed through the pain, I found I could do more reps and everything did start to firm up.  If there is one program that is fast and enjoyable that you can see nearly immediate results from, I would have to say it would be Slim in 6.  Coupled with Shakeology in the form or a Slim in 6 Challenge Pack, you will not be disappointed in what you see.  You will begin to see the fat melt away, your thighs, hips and butt getting slimmer and firmer, and you will feel more confident about yourself.  The Slim in 6 program also has all three components needed for a balanced workout.  You will have cardio, resistance and flexibility.  The Slim & 6-Pack Ab workout is also second to none.  Also, we have met and worked out with Debbie Siebers live and we’ve had the opportunity to hang out with her at Beachbody events.  My suggestion for my Slim in 6 Review is, if you are thinking about it, knowing we are headed fast toward Swimsuit Season, get this program with the Challenge Pack.  You will not regret it.  Contact me and let’s talk about it!!

Shakeology Price Increase

Shakeology Price Increase

Shakeology Price Increase

Shakeology Price Increase

Before I tell you more, just let me tell you.  The rumors are true about the Shakeology Price Increase.  On April 1st, the price of the whey formulations of Shakeology (regular chocolate and greenberry) are going to increase from $119.95 to $129.95 retail ($89.96 to $97.46 coach price). This will bring them in line with the vegan formula prices.  If you are currently using the vegan formula of Shakeology, there will be no change.  But if you currently use the regular chocolate or greenberry, you can lock in at the current price and be Grandfathered in, FOR LIFE!!  Then, you won’t have to worry about the Shakeology Price Increase.

Why the Shakeology Price Increase?

Shakeology has been the same price for 4 years.  Beachbody has tried very hard to not have a Shakeology Price Increase.  They are on a mission to help end the trend of obesity in the Unites States, Canada and around the world.  But, unfortunately, inflation finally caught up.  Not only that, but when Vegan came out there were some upgrades to the formula using different superfoods and the special formulation to make it Vegan made it necessary to have a price bump over the current Shakeology formulas.  Now, there have been dramatic increases to the formulation of the regular Shakeology and this has brought the cost of production, when you factor in for inflation, to the point where a price increase was necessary for future customers.  Although Beachbody is on a mission, they still have to make money to stay in business.  This is not a non-profit company.  So, in order to keep from losing money on future Shakeology purchases, the choice was to either increase the regular formulas to bring them in line with the Vegan formulas or start charging shipping on Home Direct Orders.  I personally am glad they chose the Shakeology price increase because free shipping is definitely a selling point to new customers for them to get on Home Direct and stay there.

How does the Shakeology Price Increase Affect Me?

So, the Shakeology Price Increase of regular (non-vegan) Shakeology will be from $119.95 to $129.95 (89.96 to $97.46 for a coach/preferred customer, which will save you more money overall).   Now all of the flavors will be the same price.  What does this mean on a day to day serving?  The cost per serving will now go from about $4.00 to about $4.33.   To me, this isn’t a big increase.  That is only $2.33 a week.  How much money do you blow on stupid stuff every week?  In fact, the average American spends about $151 on food every week according to Gallup.  Now, I’m not the brightest bulb on the tree, but, if you are spending, roughly $20 on breakfast, that is still only 13.25% of your weekly food intake.  That is with the shakeology price increase.  It’s even less than that if you are getting it at the reduced price.  So, think about it.  Is it worth it to drink Shakeology?  YES!!  Not only are you putting the best stuff out there, that your body recognizes as FOOD and not chemicals or processed crap in your body, but you are getting your full serving of fruits and vegetables along with probiotics, digestive enzymes, antioxidants and a lot of other stuff you can do research on.  If you want to read more about it, you can read it at my Shakeology website.  The bottom line is, you’re going to spend your money on something.  Lock this in now and you will not have to worry anymore about getting at least one good meal in a day without even thinking about it.  Contact me if you would like more information, but trust me and get on Shakeology HD now.  30 day money back (bottom of the bag) guarantee and you can postpone shipments if you need to.  If you want to get in shape and lose weight, put Shakeology into your regimen.

Shakeology Price Increase – FAQs from Beachbody

I heard the price of Shakeology is going up. Is that true?

– Yes. Effective April 1, 2013, the price of Chocolate (regular ONLY) and Greenberry will increase by $10—from $119.95 to $129.95.

When does the price increase go into effect?

– April 1, 2013

How does this affect cost per serving?

– Currently, the cost per serving (to a customer) is about $4.00. That will only increase by 33 cents to $4.33—which is still in line with daily cost of a Starbucks® latte, Naked® fruit drink, or other routine purchase. Only Shakeology is a WAY better value.

How much will I save by locking in the original price on HD?

– $22/month! ($10 per order + $12 on shipping and handling)

Will the increase affect bags, single-serve packets, and combo packs?

– Yes. All of the above.

Which Shakeology flavors will be affected?

– ONLY Chocolate (regular) and Greenberry. The price ($129.95) of our Vegan flavors will not change.

Will the price increase affect Challenge Packs?

– No. Challenge Pack prices will not change after April 1st, regardless of which Shakeology flavor your customer chooses. However, after the initial Challenge Pack purchase, the monthly price will be $129.95.

I’m already on HD for Chocolate or Greenberry. Will I be subject to the price increase?

– Good news! If you’re already on HD for either Chocolate or Greenberry (or alternating), you will NOT be affected by price increase. You’ll continue to pay $119.95/month for life—as long as you never cancel your HD subscription.

I bought Shakeology before, but I’m not currently on HD. Will I be able to lock in the original price after April 1st?

– No. Whether you purchased previously or not, if you’re not on HD before April 1, 2013, you will be subject to the new price. In fact, after April 1st, ALL new one-time purchases and HD subscriptions will cost $129.95.

Why is the price of Shakeology going up?

– We’re raising the price for three reasons: 1) to counteract the rising costs of fuel, shipping, and ingredients, 2) so we can continue to offer FREE shipping with HD orders, and 3) to preserve the integrity of our ingredients (rather than skimping or ordering from lower quality sources).

Muscle Building for Women

Muscle Building for Women

Muscle Building for Women

Muscle Building for Women

OK, let’s get this straight.  I am NOT a woman.  In fact, I don’t think I have ever even pretended to be a woman.  So, the topic of Muscle Building for Women is a topic that is more of a theory for me than experience.  As you know though, I’m a Beachbody Coach so, I’ve had to deal with women who are new to working out and want help from me as their coach.  As a result, I hear from women all the time who think they should really be into cardio and stay away from weights, pushups and pullups.  Muscle Building and lifting weights isn’t something you hear from them very often.  As a result, I find myself explaining some irrefutable facts to them.  A few of those include the following.  Muscles are sexy on women.  Most men are not attracted to the super model body type where there is nothing but skin and bones.  Most men find a woman with a 6-pack sexy.  Women put on muscle slower than men.  It not only comes on slower, it’s harder to do.  Men have, on average, 10 times more testosterone than women.  Some women worry about bulking up but it simply isn’t going to happen unless they are trying to.  That includes lifting very heavy, taking supplements, and possibly even taking testosterone treatments.  The women that compete in body building competitions have been training for years, eating perfectly and taking a high amount of supplements, possibly even steroids.  There are all natural body building competitions but if you look at them, they are very feminine women with sexy bodies.  They look GREAT in a bikini and don’t have pecs like a man covered in cloth.  Women also typically carry fat in different areas of their bodies and burn it differently.  Because women have lower amounts of testosterone, their metabolism is typically much slower.  The body was developed so that women store fat more easily and burn it slower because they are the ones who carry and nourish children.  Men were typically hunters and women were the gatherers in ancient society.  It’s not easy to overcome that genetic makeup.  When I started working out and then eventually became a Beachbody Coach, I told people all the time, your body shape is going to be determined by three things:  Nutrition, Exercise and Genetics.  You can’t do anything about genetics but you can overcome a lot of it with good nutrition and proper exercise.    So Muscle Building for Women shouldn’t be a scary thing.  It should be something that is done with excitement of what your body is going to look like.

Muscle Building for Women – Just Do It

There are a lot of good websites out there for tips on Muscle Building for Women.  The main things, as I said before is to tackle the nutrition along with the exercise.  Nutrition basically means eating enough.  The problem most people, men and women, have putting on muscle is that they don’t eat enough.  If you don’t eat enough, you will lose weight, but you will also lose lean muscle, even if you are lifting and lifting heavy.  If you eat too much, you will put on weight in the form of fat along with the muscle so the muscle won’t look as lean and sexy as it can.  There is definitely a balance you need between complex carbs, lean proteins, and good fats.  Again, there are general guidelines out there but if you neglect any of those, you won’t have the results you want to have.  After you figure out the nutrition part, the lifting weights part is really easy.  That’s just a matter of doing it.  Some people want to figure out the nutrition first, but when talking about Muscle Building for Women, my suggestion is don’t change too much too fast.  This is a lifetime endeavor so, you don’t have to do it all in one day.  As the master in the TV show used to say “Patience Grasshopper”.

Muscle Building for Women – Where to Start

A lot of people think you have to go to the gym to lift weights and get a good resistance workout.  That simply isn’t true.  If you have weights at home or can afford a set of the adjustable weights, that would be incredible, but one of my favorite programs is ChaLEAN Extreme.  In that program, Chalene Johnson talks about form and lifiting weights and even gives great advice during the program and talks about nutrition.  Chalene also shows how the exercises can be easily modified using resistance bands.  There is also some flexibility and cardio mixed in with the program which is always needed in any workout regimen.  So, if you want to know where to start if you have never lifted before, this would be a great place.  There is a 30 day money back guarantee on it too so what do you have to lose?  I personally have done that program and I can tell you from experience, it’s incredible for both men and women.  Chalene also concentrates on form over ego so there is less risk of injury.  Contact me if you’d like more information but again, my best advice is just do it.  Have fun with Muscle Building for Women and do it and you’ll have those sexy, long and lean muscles you’ve always wanted.

This is a strange topic for me.  It’s not that I was not used to doing High Intensity Interval Training in the past.  It’s simply because the thought of Intensity and Working Out in the same sentence was so foreign to me for so long.  I didn’t workout after college for 15 years.  It was CRAZY to think how bad I let my fitness get, but I did.  I didn’t know what to do, but I knew going to the gym was out and I didn’t have a home gym so, it was run or walk and frankly, I’m not a runner.  So, getting exercise for me was getting up and going to the fridge.  I would occasionally go out for a run, but when I broke a sweat it was time to stop.  I would get sore and wait until the soreness went away and then maybe try it again.  Does ANY of this sound familiar to you?  Please tell me it does.  Now, it was a different story in High School.  We had natural interval training.  It was also High Intensity Interval Training.  It was called sprints.  We even did what we called suicides or gut busters for baseball and football.  Those are where you run about 5 yards, touch the ground, run back, touch the ground, run out 10 yards, touch the ground, run back, and do that out to about 20 yards or so.  I hated wind sprints or suicides.  But, it was natural interval training.  That kind of training is GREAT for athletes.  Cardio builds stamina but interval training builds fast recovery ability.  For instance, in baseball, ever see a guy truck it down to first base hard to beat out a bunt or ground ball.  Then a minute or two later, he trucks it down to second only to have the batter foul the ball off so he runs back to first and that may repeat itself a few times.  High Intensity Interval Training allows the heart rate to go up high to pump the blood where it needs to go and then allows for quick recovery so the body is ready to go again fast.  Cardio just gets the heart rate up to a decent rate and it stays there pretty much for the duration of the exercise.

High Intensity Training for Normal People

Remember, there are a lot of studies out there on High Intensity Interval Training.  This is coming from my own perspective.  I can tell you that High Intensity Interval Training takes a shorter amount of time for the same results for calorie burn and for weight loss.  There are also studies that conclude that there is an “After Burn” that happens for up to 24 hours AFTER you finish your exercise.  P90X Plyometrics is a kind of interval training also.  I remember one day looking at my heart rate monitor and seeing 900 calories burned during the workout.  That was in 1 hour.  I was really getting after it.  What surprised me was an hour later, I had burned an additional 400 calories just sitting at the computer.  I don’t know how accurate that is but it’s a fact that High Intensity Interval Training gives you great results.  Of course, they will differ for you depending on your body type and your past workout history and your genetics.  The first time I really heard the “After Burn” explained was when Turbo Fire came out.  It is a follow-up program to Turbo Jam, both done by Chalene Johnson.  Chalene takes you on a ride that is fun and definitely turns on the heat by having moderate periods of exercise followed by short bursts of High Intensity.  Insanity on the other hand takes you through periods of High Intensity followed by short periods of rest/moderate exercise.  They are totally opposite.  Both will give you the After Burn but just in different ways.  Insanity is for people who can get after it right now and your knees aren’t a problem.  Turbo Fire is more easily modified and is a great workout that can get you where you need to be if you aren’t ready for Insanity now.  Of course, Turbo Jam is a little less intense than either of these.

High Intensity Interval Training for Dummies

When I was playing baseball and running to get in shape, our coach would set up cones on the track.  We would have to sprint one, walk one, jog one, sprint one, walk one, jog one, etc.  That was High Intensity Interval Training for us in baseball.  The cones were about 110 to 120 feet apart because the baselines were 90 feet.  He said you never practice running 90 feet if that is the goal, you always add a third to it.  If you are used to sprinting 110 to 120 feet, 90 feet is no big deal.  So, that is basically what interval training is.  It makes you get the same basic workout in and do it in a shorter amount of time.  You also get the After Burn so you burn more calories longer after the workout is done.  Don’t forget as you are doing High Intensity Interval Training that you also need to incorporate resistance and flexibility into your regimen.  Don’t become a one trick pony or even though you are hitting the High Intensity Interval Training hard, you will still plateau.  Mix it up and have fun!!  Contact me and we can talk more about it but have fun and get moving!!!

Diets Don’t Work

Diets Don’t Work

Diets Don't Work

Diets Don’t Work

I’m living proof that Diets Don’t Work.  I don’t know why people still think they do.  The first three letters of the word Diet should tell you what I think about diets.  I remember my Aunt having a piece of paper on her refrigerator when I was growing up and it had the saying “Once on the Lips, Forever on the Hips” written on it.  I remember looking at it and wondering what that meant.  I’ve told you before that I grew up on the farm and had a high metabolism so, I didn’t understand dieting.  My Mom cooked 3 meals a day and most of it was fried with lard or vegetable shortening.  The greens had fatback in them.  Everything else was just good comfort food like macaroni and cheese or mashed potatoes.  I remember my Aunt always seemed to be dieting and she was always, dare I say it, fat.  In our world she was normal though.  But she never was happy with the shape of her body.  This was during the years when running was popular in the early 70s but she wasn’t going to go out and run.  After I got married and we had a couple of children, I found out quickly what it was like to pack on weight and not know what to do.  I knew I wouldn’t workout in a gym. I also loved food.  I wasn’t going to consistently run and do that right either.  I was basically stuck.  My wife talked me into getting her a treadmill and I used it more than she did.  We eventually did what most people do with it and used it for a towel rack and later sold it in a yard sale for like $30.  So, I was relegated to diets.  Believe me when I tell you we did them all.  We did the no carb, all carb, hollywood, banana, grapefruit, coconut, fruit and veggies only, weight watchers, slim n trim, etc.  You name it we did it.  When I say diets don’t work, please understand me, I did lose weight.  I lost a lot of weight on some of them.  I  lost a bunch of fat.  But, I also lost a lot of muscle.  Sad but true.  And, that in a nutshell is why Diets Don’t Work!!!

Why Diets Don’t Work

It’s really pretty simple why diets don’t work.  People go on diets because they have horrible eating habits otherwise.  If they had great eating habits in general, they would never have to go on a diet.  Because those habits are just that, habits, it is only a matter of time before the diet goes out of the window and the old habits take over.  When that happens, the weight comes back on and it usually comes on faster than it came off and more of it.  That’s why diets don’t work.  As I said before, when you diet, you lose fat, sure, but you also lose muscle.  When you lose muscle, you lose strength and stamina, and your metabolism drops.  When your metabolism drops, you store fat more easily.  Fat comes off last the first place it goes on.  For men, typically, it’s around the waist and for women it’s around the hips and thighs.  The fat can also get stored around internal organs and THAT is when it becomes even more dangerous.  The Yo Yo dieting is called that because you lose on a diet and gain back and lose on a diet and gain back and the cycle keeps repeating until finally, for a lot of people the pancreas finally shouts “THAT’S ENOUGH”  and it just gives up and stops producing insulin and that is when full blown diabetes happens.  It’s not good at all.  The sad thing also is, even if the weight is the same after a diet, you will actually be bigger because fat is less dense than muscle, and you will be even more unhealthy.  It’s like a prison, always dieting.

You know Diets Don’t Work – Now What?

When I’m in a restaurant and I order things specially made that I know aren’t horrible for me and decline the extra bread or ask the waitress not to bring me the roll with the salad, people sometimes ask what diet I’m on.  I tell them, Diets Don’t Work, but that crap isn’t on my nutritional plan.  I like the words nutritional plan because that sounds like something good for my body whereas diet sounds like something I’m depriving myself of.  I never want to deprive myself of anything and the good news is, there are PLENTY of good foods out there and if the good foods are eaten regularly and the bad foods are eaten in moderation, that is the best way to go.  Also, adding muscle will burn it off.  I remember after starting P90X someone said, the harder you workout the more your body’s metabolism goes up.  My wife said she could feel the heat coming off of my body at night because my metabolism was fired up.  You will turn your body into an incinerator instead of a garbage dump if you workout hard and eat right.  People say exercise more and eat less.  I say, Exercise Right and Eat for Fuel not for Fun.  If you do those things, I promise everything will work out ok.  You’ve heard me say I will never be an underwear model.  But, I’m more healthy now than I ever EVER would have been jumping from diet to diet and doing the yo yo thing.  Contact me and let me help you figure out how to get the most out of your nutritional plan so you don’t feel like you’re starving yourself and find your soul mate workout so it’s fun and not torture.  Beachbody’s workout programs and Shakeology can be a big part of you getting the most out of your life.  I know they have for me and I can help you do it too!!!

Insanity Review

Insanity Review

Insanity Review

Insanity Review

As a part of my Insanity Review, I think it is only fair for you to know I have not done a total 60 days with Insanity.  There are a lot of reasons for that.  I was excited and a little fearful when it came out.  I have done all of the DVDs and I’ve done over 30 days with it when I started incorporating other programs in with it.  So, I feel like I can write a decent Insanity Review because of that.  I knew I was in good shape because I had been doing P90X and some other Beachbody Programs.  Insanity was totally different than anything else Beachbody had ever produced.  In fact, it was totally different than anything ANYBODY had ever put out.  People know about Interval Training.  Most people, when they go to a gym or go out for a run, go at a constant pace.  They get on the treadmill or elliptical or go out and run and they never change their routine or their pace.  The heart rate goes up and stays there.  With Interval Training, most programs go at a slow pace with short bursts of intensity.  Insanity stands that on it’s head and goes for long periods of intensity with short rest periods.  Shaun T. really pulled out all the stops with this program.  The first set of warmup exercises were all I needed to know I was in for a tough ride.  The fit test showed me that even though I was in shape, this was a different program I was getting involved with and I knew I was going to love it.  I had to stop and take a break during the first 10 minutes.  I remember going to the pool and talking to one of the lifeguards and I remember telling him, if he can find anybody he knows and they will come to my house and we put in the first DVD, if they can hang with it and do all of the reps at the speed they do it on the DVD, I will give them $1,000.  It was that hard.  There is no way you can do that at the pace they go unless you have been doing this particular program for awhile.  After I did the first day of Insanity, I couldn’t stand on my tip toes for 3 days.  My calves got burnt UP.  So, for my Insanity Review, I can simply tell you, if you want to get a great workout in and have fun and sweat and do something REAL, do Insanity.  It’s crazy fun.

Insanity Review – Who Should Do It

As a part of this Insanity Review, you should know it is high intensity and high impact.  If you have heart problems, back or knee problems or anything that will cause further injury or hurt you if you are jumping, Insanity may not be for you.  Consult your physician if you have any doubts.  As always, it can be modified.  I said at the beginning of this Insanity Review that I have never done a full 60 days of Insanity.  The reason is because about 30 days in, my knees start to bother me so, I listen to my body and back off.  I’m a little older at 47 than some of the people who get after it and do Insanity full speed.   I have also not been kind to my knees in the past with some of the activities I did in my younger years from football to skiing to volleyball.  So, my knees start to bother me with all of the impact.  So, I back it down and do something else and then come back to it as a hybrid workout program where I incorporate the Insanity workouts with other things I’m doing.  I love Insanity but my body isn’t cut out to be a cheetah.  I’m built more like a Rhino so Body Beast has been GREAT for me.  I do still love Insanity though.  That is why I wanted to write an Insanity Review.  My recommendation for you is, if you are interested in getting it, we have a 30-day money back guarantee and coupled with the P90X Recovery Drink and Shakeology, you have everything you need to be successful.  And of course, I will be your Coach so how can you go wrong.  So that’s my Insanity Review.  Contact me and let’s get you moving on a new you with Insanity!!

How Many Calories?

How Many Calories?

How Many Calories

How Many Calories

Up until the time I started working out with P90X a few years ago, I never really worried about calories and what they meant and how to calculate them or any of that.  Then, I got obsessed with calories and how to calculate them and what they meant.  I guess in order to figure out how many calories you need to eat every day, you first need to understand what a calorie is.  A Calorie is simply a measurement of energy.  In scientific terms, it is the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 Gram of water 1 degree Celsius.  It is equal to 4.18400 Joules.  I know you are thinking….WHAT!!!????  Well, it is really just simply that.  A lot of people don’t even know what they are except that a calorie is a bad thing that food contains.  That couldn’t actually be further from the truth.  A calorie is something that you NEED to live.   You’ve seen me use this analogy before but it is true.  Think of it like a steam locomotive.  Calories are the coal that fuels the fire that turns the water into steam that drives the engine.  Without coal, a steam engine slows down, the fire goes out and it stops.  Without calories you die.  Too much coal and the fire gets smothered and goes out and the steam engine slows down and the fire can go out.  Too many calories and your body stores them and you can literally die before your time.  So, what is the balance?  How many calories do you need to live an optimal life?  Hopefully, this will help you some.

How Many Calories do I need to lose weight?

As a general rule of thumb, 3,500 calories is equivalent to about 1 lb.  So, if you want to lose 2 lbs a week, you have to have a calorie deficit of about 7,000 calories.  Now, you’ve probably heard that before.  That shouldn’t be new news to you if you have read things and paid attention and done any amount of research.  How many calories you need though, depends on the TYPE of calories.  This may be new news to you.  There are good calories and bad calories.  Some experts call them empty calories.  Empty calories are calories that add weight but not nourishment.  They are like wet coal on a fire.  They come in the form of sugary drinks and just about anything you get from a fast food joint, minus the salads of course.  Good calories are typically foods that have one ingredient and come without labels.  These are proteins, fruits and vegetables.  So, the number of calories you need will depend on the type of calories you take in.  Here is the thing, although calories are calories, some calories can actually fire up your metabolism while others, in improper amounts, can actually slow your metabolism down.  There are a lot of sites out there that have calculators that can tell you how many calories to eat per day.  My recommendation is to do a few of them and see what they all say.  Remember, these are based on a bell curve.  You may need more or less calories depending on your body type, energy level, metabolism, workout intensity, muscle tone and development, and all of that.   So, to say you need X amount of calories is just wrong.  Any trainer that tells you that, run from them.  They can give you guidelines but no one can say with certainty.  One this is for sure though.  Too many calories and you gain weight.  Too few calories and you will lose muscle tone and your metabolism will slow dramatically.  You want to keep the fire stoked by eating enough of the right kind of calories.

How many calories do I REALLY need?

I was at a Tony Horton Fitness Camp a few years ago and someone asked Tony that question.  He said he didn’t know.  They asked him how many calories he ate a day and he said he didn’t know.  I was stunned.  This is the creator of P90X, the man who can get you ripped in 90 days.  He is ripped now at 55 and he has now clue how many calories he eats in a day.  I’ll never forget what he said though.  He said he eats for fuel and not for fun and he allows himself a little chocolate as a treat once in awhile.  He stops eating before he gets stuffed and he eats good clean food.  He also drinks a lot of water every day so he is never dehydrated.  That has stuck with me and when he said that, I stopped counting calories too.  It is basically simple.  Eat foods with one ingredient.  Eat for fuel and not for fun.  Drink plenty of water.  It all takes care of itself from there.  The bottom line on all this is, if you go into starvation mode to lose weight, you’ll burn muscle and you’ll end up being skinny fat.  You’ll have no muscle tone and you won’t look good.  If you eat too much, you may build muscle but you’ll never see it under the fat.  So, eat for fuel and not for fun and eat clean.  I have a friend who is a coach also and she says this and you can try it and see what happens.  No Dairy, No Sugar, No Gluten, No Processed Food and No Alcohol.  Try it for 30 days and see how you feel.  Let me know if you need anything.  I’d LOVE to help you on your fitness journey!!!
