Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child – Give and Get a Cookie!!

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child

Melanie and I have been involved with Operation Christmas Child – Samaritan’s Purse for several years.  We love that it is possible for us to give back to children all around the world at Christmas and expect nothing in return.  This past Sunday at Church, they showed a video that really hit home.  It showed families in America gathering for Christmas, carving a Turkey (we do BBQ),  opening gifts, eating pie, decorating Christmas Trees, etc.  Intermingled with those videos of a “typical American Christmas”, it showed children from other Countries, in poverty, hungry, no shoes, etc. walking through trash and garbage dumps and drinking filthy water.  Then of course, they show the children getting a shoebox from Operation Christmas Child.  So, this Christmas, while we are putting on more weight and getting fatter, children in other parts of the world are suffering with no hope.  I know children here are suffering as well and I’m saying to ignore them, but children elsewhere have absolutely no hope of their situation improving and they don’t live in an environment where that is even possible.

As I said, we’ve been doing shoeboxes now for years.  We started because our Church did it and we wanted to participate.  We also decided we would fill a box for each of our children and one for us.  So, until Luke was born, we did 3 boy boxes and 2 girl boxes.  Now, we do 4 boy boxes and 2 girl boxes every year.  It’s really easy to do and inexpensive because what you put in them is stuff that is fun and they need and you can get at pretty much any Dollar type store in your area.  You can even put in educational things if you want.  It doesn’t have to be expensive.  It just has to be something a child would like and for children who have basically nothing, that means they will be happy with pretty much anything.  So many times, Melanie has come home with stuff and just cried because, as she is looking at the little toys or feeling the little socks, she will look at me and say, this is going to make a child somewhere very very happy to have this and we are so blessed, we don’t even think about it anymore.  And, she is more than so right.

Operation Christmas Child – Our Guilt Trip Society

Now, I grew up watching Sally Struthers cry on TV infomercials about the starving children all over the world.  Somewhere along the line we all tend to get a little bit cynical.  I totally understand that.  I wish I could get that out of my mind about how much we are taken advantage of in society by people guilt tripping us into giving more than we want to give.  It happens all of the time and people get taken advantage of so easily.  That happens especially with older people.  But, I can tell you, this is something you can do that will directly go to people without just throwing money at something and hope it makes a difference.  The shoeboxes go directly to children in other Countries.  I love this verse from The Bible:

James 1:27 – Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

I think that pretty much says it all.  If you want Pure and Faultless Religion, take care of orphans and widows.  When you fill a shoebox, you can expect nothing in return.  It’s just pure giving and you know The Bible also says it is better to give than to receive.  When we give here to people in need, it typically comes with strings attached.  We also typically become judgemental or proud of what we’ve done.  Sometimes, it can even strain relationships because we expect something in return or we see the person we gave to as ungrateful or they avoid us because they don’t want to be confronted.  That is not the case with the Shoebox Ministry.  It is giving at it’s finest, from the heart.

Operation Christmas Child – Giving With A Purpose

Shoebox Ministry

Shoebox Ministry

In each shoebox, Samaritan’s Purse puts a tract with the Gospel Message.  There is an old saying that says “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”.  Well, with the shoebox ministry, kids get something for Christmas and as they are given the shoeboxes with gifts, they also have local Missionaries and believers talk to them about Jesus and then they have a tract in there in their own language they can read (if they can read) and share with their friends.  It’s a great tool for helping local Missionaries open a door to talk to children and their families.  What better way can you help Children this Christmas than to pack a shoebox (or five) with small gifts a kid would enjoy.

Check out this video of Scotty McCreery showing you how to pack a shoebox:

Operation Christmas Child – How You Can Help – Get a Cookie!!

If you live anywhere close to us in Columbia, SC, the Chick Fil A on Garner’s Ferry Road has shoeboxes available.  Other Chick Fil A stores may have them as well or you can contact some local churches in your area if you prefer.  All you need to do is come by and pick one up and drop it back off filled with stuff for “your child”.  There will be an envelope inside also for you to put a monetary donation to help with shipping the package.  The requested donation is $7 but you can give more (or if you can’t afford it, you can just bring the shoebox back).  Do it, bring the boxes back filled on  November 14th between 5 PM and 8 PM and Chick Fil A will give you a Chocolate Chunk Cookie as a Thank You for doing it.  Again, if you can’t get it to them at that time, I’m sure if you bring it back sooner they will take the box and you can still get a cookie.  Then, Samaritan’s Purse will do the rest.  Easy Peasy.  I recommend filling at least one for every member of your household, of course, just like we do.  If you want, you can get me the money and we will fill a box for you in your name.  Most people don’t have time to fly around the world to meet with others and share the gospel.  This is a way you can help and never leave your neighborhood, literally.  BUT, speaking of that, I am planning a trip to go back to West Africa on January 12th, possibly with my son again, and we will be soliciting donations for that ministry as well.  Look for more details on it soon.

If you want more information on Operation Christmas Child, you can go to and check it out or Contact Me.  I’m hoping you do this.  It’s such a small thing that can affect so many people.  As the saying goes….Any fool can count the number of seeds in an apple, but only God can count the number of apples in one seed.  This is a small seed you will be planting and only God knows where it will end up.  Leave a Legacy and do this.

The Wussification of America

The Wussification of America

Baseball Trophy

Baseball Trophy

This topic is a bit scary for me.  I don’t know how much detail I will go into here, mainly because I know people don’t read long blogs.  But, the Wussification of America is real and it is progressing.  I don’t know when it started, or how it started, but there is absolutely no doubt that things are different from when I was growing up.  My parents said it was different for them than it was in my generation so this isn’t a new phenomenon and my thoughts and my little blog here are not likely to make it go away.  But, here are the words of someone that some others would consider a man out of touch with our new society.  Having graduated from The Citadel, where everything was a competition, maybe that’s true.

I remember growing up when you had to win to get a trophy.  I was shocked when I started coaching baseball and found out that all of the kids got a trophy.  Of course, the winners of the league got a trophy that was a wee bit bigger but they all got a trophy.  In fact, half way through the season, sometimes at the beginning, they would ask, when do we get our trophy?  It was like they didn’t care at all about the game or being the best they could be.  All they wanted was that blasted trophy they didn’t have to earn.

Now, I’m all for trophies.  Don’t get me wrong on that.  The prize is what drives us to compete.  Being exceptional is something that should drive all of us to compete.  Many, many immigrants have come here to this country not for handouts, but to be able to be free to compete in our free enterprise system.  They came here to build their dreams.  But, here in this Country now, with all of the things going on in our schools, we are teaching children that all they have to do to earn their meal ticket is simply exist.  Somehow, we’ve taught them that if they are simply breathing, they are “owed” something by the rest of us and that is not what the Founding Fathers intended, from what I read.  The documents they wrote do state that we are all created equal.  I do not doubt that at all.  And, I do believe it.  However, we also have the ability to use our brains and with a little work ethic, we are free to become as unequal as we wish.  At least, that used to be the situation here.

The Wussification of America – Why are we made to feel guilty?

So, what are some examples of The Wussification of America?  I started thinking about it again yesterday when I heard about a High School Football Team in Texas.  They beat another team 91 to 0 and a parent from the other team filed a bullying charge against them.  The winning team’s coach subbed in their players, had a continuous clock in the second half, told his team to fair catch the ball on punts, etc.  But, how do you tell your players to not score if they have the ball.  The way I was taught, it is the offensive team’s purpose to score and the defensive team’s purpose to stop them.  Now, I’m telling you, it’s no fun getting beat like that.  I coach football right now also and in our game this past Saturday, the score at halftime was 38 to 0.  We weren’t upset or mad at the other team.  In fact, we used it as a learning experience for our boys.  We told them that in life, sometimes you’re going to have your fanny handed to you by a better team.  BUT, that doesn’t mean we have to give up.  We told them to continue to fight and make the best out of the bad situation.  The team responded also.  I told them to stop them from scoring at least ONCE in the second half and to get out there and hit somebody and never give up!!  In the second half, we held them to one touchdown and we also scored a touchdown at the buzzer.  We changed our gameplan and found a few better matchups.  They subbed in some players, etc.  The final score was 46 to 6.  It was a nasty butt cutting.  We were overmatched and they were well coached.    We all learned a lesson from that game.  But none of us thought to file a bullying charge against the other team.  There have been worse scores in football and you can google them if you wish.  Here is the story on that Texas game to see if you choose to read it and watch the video.  Football Bullying Charge

The Wussification of America – Lessons for my Children

I have always played with my children and as they have gotten older, I started playing harder.  I never let them beat me intentionally but I sometimes let them get close.  My purpose wasn’t to embarrass them in anything but to make them play hard and try to beat me.  I’m still the same way.  If I am not allowed to win, I see no purpose in playing.  If you beat me, you beat me.  I am better at some things than at other things.  We all are.  But that doesn’t mean I won’t try to beat you if we are playing a game.  When my children beat me at something, they know they’ve beaten me and not that I’ve let them win so they feel better about themselves.  I really think I’m preparing them for life also.

Now, in our society, we are so politically correct in everything we say and do and indeed, even the things we are taught to think.  We have taught people that they don’t have to work for what they get.  Over half of America is now on some form of Government Subsidy.  Again, the Pilgrims and the Founding Fathers saw what happens when Government is in too much control.  We have also seen that in other Countries and can study history.  There is no doubt to where we will end up as a Country if we continue down this road.  We have lost the ability to live our lives with rugged individualism and have allowed others to tell us how to live and what to do so that we don’t “hurt other people’s feelings”.

The Wussification of America will continue unless we as individuals stand up to it and decide to fight it.  That will undoubtedly make you unpopular and people will get mad at you and call you conceited and bigoted and they will tell you that you think you are better than everyone else.  The truth is, no one ever helped anyone get better by being worse.  Said another way, as I heard someone say once, broke people can’t help broke people.  A football team gets better by playing teams that are better than they are.  Competing is what makes us great.  If we lose our competitive spirit, we are doomed to failure.  More to come on this subject later, maybe, on “The Competitive Edge”.

Bikram Yoga Class

Bikram Yoga Class

Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga

Maybe I am a bit insane.  I don’t know.  But, I feel the need to go take a Bikram Yoga Class.  I talked about P90X and P90X2 Yoga a little while back.  But, I have just basically dabbled with Yoga in my workout routines and have done the X and X2 routines.  Yoga is one of those things that I love, but I hate, you know?  I don’t like it but it is something that I need to do.  I do believe it is the fountain of youth.  Every time I do it, I feel more flexible and more in control.  Lately, Melanie got us a family plan at the Chiropractor’s office.  We basically go in and get adjusted once a week where they pop us out and realign our spines.  I will do it for a month with getting popped once a week or so and see how I feel, but I really think I will do better just taking Yoga Classes now and then.  Who knows, I might even want to become an instructor one day.  EEEK….

So, I am really looking into going and taking a Bikram Yoga Class.  It’s scary, but at the same time, it really is something I want to do.  I remember the first time I did Yoga.  I felt so worthless.  I remember a friend of mine explaining it as the balance of an elephant on roller skates and the flexibility of concrete.  Well, that’s basically the way I felt for sure.  It also made me extremely sore.  You do pushups and at the end of the pushups, you do upward and downward dogs and really stretch your joints.  I’m thinking before I go into it and do a live class, I need to do some more at home.  That’s where P90X2 Yoga comes in.

Bikram Yoga Class – What to Expect

Frosty the Snowman Melts

Frosty the Snowman Melts

I really have no idea.  I went to the website of the local class that I think I would want to attend.  I looked at the retail store.  Everything is cutesie girlie stuff.  I don’t think I will need a hairband and it looks like I will need to be buying a special mat in order to not slip all over the place.  I sweat like a pig when I do yoga in my nice 72 degree controlled environment.  I can’t imagine doing it in a room that is 105 degrees and at least 50% humidity.  I think I will also need to get some new yoga clothes so, in the words of Doug Couch, I don’t “show my junk” when I’m lifting my leg and swinging it through.  All those cutesie little girls in there might not appreciate having a flasher in their group.  I do know I will have to stay extremely hydrated.  With as much as I normally sweat, I’m sure I will be a nasty pool of sweat by the time it’s over.  Images of Frosty the Snowman in the greenhouse comes to mind.

Bikram Yoga  Class – Getting Up My Nerves and Scheduling

I guess the only thing to do is to face my fears and do it, right?  I will be going by the studio today.  They have a special there where you can sign up for 30 days of unlimited classes for $99.  If you complete 30 classes in 30 days, you get a Tshirt and a party at a local club here in town.  YAY.  But, to schedule it, and be able to do it with the holidays coming up, I may actually have to wait until February.  I have so much stuff going on and will be out of town during November camping and doing stuff with the family.  December is full with the holidays.  I am planning a trip to Africa possibly in January for 10 days.  So, it looks like February will be my month.  I just have to go by there and see if they will let me take classes and sign up for the 1st Timer Classes for February if I take a class before that.  I really want a Tshirt and a party so, we’ll see.  I guess that amount of time will allow me to get some yoga in at home and prepare.  I feel the need to be ready to do 30 days of Yoga in a row.  So, this may give me time to prepare.

I remember starting Jujitsu Classes though and I was crazy afraid.  I don’t want to feel this way, but I’m sure I’ll get over it.  It’s a matter of walking in and having some persistence and just doing it.  It’s a mindset.  It’s something that has to be done.  If other people can do it, I can too, right?

So, time to conquer some fears!  Do the thing you fear and your fear will disappear.  We’ll see how it goes and I will definitely keep you posted how it goes.

If you live near me, let me know if you want to go with me.  I would love to have a friend hold my hand and let me cry on their shoulder.  To me, classes are a lot more intimidating than working out at home.  At home, I’m in the security of my house and no one can see me but when I’m in the middle of a bunch of people, there is “nowhere to hide”.  So, let me know!!

Affordable Care Act

Affordable Care Act

Watch this video by Dave Ramsey first.  It is plain and simple and lays it out better than I ever could.

Dave Ramsey

Dave Ramsey

OK….I am not Anti-Obama because I don’t like him.  I am Anti-Obama because I am against his policies in general.  I believe three documents should guide our lives.  These were the documents the Founding Fathers used.  The first is the Bible.  It was used to construct the second and third which are the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of The United States of America.  I just see too much that we are doing in government that we shouldn’t be doing.  The way I read it, we have the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.  I don’t see where we have a right to free phones, free food or free healthcare and borrowing money to make it happen.  EVERYTHING I’ve seen says to me that if anything is free, it has to be paid for by someone.  I would love it if we lived in a society like Start Trek where there is no need for money, everyone has everything they need and there is no one robbing anyone else.  Imperialism without corruption is impossible.  We do have a need for laws, but with common sense involved.

I just don’t see that kind of society working at all in our near future.  People keep bringing up greed.  Well, the truth is, people wanting to be the best they can be is what got us here.  It was people seeking their fortune and fame in a brand new world and dragging themselves up by their bootstraps that made us into the “exceptional” nation we are.  Here is a cool video on “greed” by Milton Friedman on Phil Donahue’s show awhile back.  It was applicable then and is applicable now.  Milton Friedman is one of the foremost experts on economics.  This is worth a watch.  You can watch his full interview on youtube also, but this is a short clip talking about freed, free enterprise, concentration of power and what greed means to society.

Affordable Care Act – Congress and The President Should Live Under It

Now, I’m just a simple man, but when Congress exempts themselves from laws that they tell me would be good for me, why should I believe them?  If the Affordable Care Act is so good, why don’t they live under it?  Why do they have special retirement plans and special heathcare plans and special this and special that?  I guess that makes me unelectable because I think if they pass a law, they should abide by it.  Why are there so many waivers for large corporations?  Why are there so many waivers for special companies and special people?  If it’s that good, why not make everyone comply?  It is nearly 2,000 pages.  If you want to read more about it, you can go here to download a copy of it.  I admit, I haven’t read it.  I don’t know anyone who has.  I ran across a guy the other day who denies he is liberal but all of his ideas are and to me, a rose by any other name smells just as sweet, right?  Anyway, he said he had read every page.  I didn’t call him a liar but I was thinking it.  It’s a long document full of legal language that I believe the people who wrote it don’t even understand.  As Nancy Pelosi said, we have to pass it to find out what’s in it.  I mean…WHAT???  Do you think the Founding Fathers decided to pass legislation to find out what was in it?  I mean…C’MON MAN!!  REALLY!!???

Affordable Care Act – What it means to you

If you think this won’t affect you, you are wrong.  46 percent of Americans now pay NO federal income taxes.  So, it is now very likely that fewer and fewer people will be voted into office who want to limit that.  We are on a downhill slide.  Why would anyone elect someone to office who is going to take away their meal ticket?  “Vote for me because I’m going to take away all your free stuff” isn’t a good campaign slogan, is it?  Just the other day, I saw where there was a glitch and the limit was taken off of EBT cards and people let their friends know and there was a run on food at places like Wal-Mart getting buggies and buggies and buggies of stuff.  You and I paid for that.  Yes, ….we did.  That food isn’t free.  Dare I say, most of those people didn’t look like they had missed any meals, either.  We have completely redefined the poverty line for the world.  We don’t have a stinkin’ CLUE what poverty looks like anymore.  Take a trip to West Africa with me.  I’ll show you poverty.  When you and I pay into the system, we pay for all of the free stuff.  We are paying for people to ride through life on the government and when that happens, it takes away individual rights, freedoms and self esteem which means, people don’t care about anything in life anymore.  Just give me my free stuff.  And, when everyone pays the same thing, that means, by definition, your insuance premiums will be going up.  The middle class is going to take the biggest hit on this.  People were so excited about it.  Nothing is free.  Someone has to pay for it.

People say, well, we are forced to get car insurance, this is no different.  Yes, it is.  Nobody makes you get car insurance, but if you want to drive, you have to have insurance to protect me from your stupidity.  If you want health insurance, go get it.  It is not a RIGHT…it is a privilege.  Driving is not a RIGHT…it is a privilege.  There are things that are laid out in the Constitution that are RIGHTS.  One of those is NOT healthcare.  You have the RIGHT to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.  No one is taking your life away.  If you want a longer life, and a healthier life, you have the RIGHT to that.  BUT, you need to get it.  It is NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY to help you get free or cheap medical care.

Affordable Care Act – Do The Math!!

If you have read all of this and you got to this point, kudos to you.  From everything I’ve seen and read and just applying common sense to it, this is a bad piece of legislation.  Social Security is going Bankrupt.  Dave Ramsey will even tell you, if you put just 10 percent of what you pay into Social Security into an investment, you will do better long term than Social Security.  It is nothing more than a legalized ponzi scheme.  Government is taking Social Security money and using it for other things and has for some time.  The money you paid in is not there anymore.  And, with more and more people on the government take, there are fewer and fewer giving.  The math doesn’t add up.  That is why they are looking at limiting benefits and raising the age to collect.

I am not saying our healthcare system doesn’t need an overhaul.  But the truth is, we could do more by just allowing the States to have competition across state lines with insurance companies, which means, the States have to get together and have the same requirements first.  Allow the private sector to take control and make it simpler, not easier, for drug companies to bring new drugs to market.  Also, if I am a business owner with 500 employees, I would get a better rate than your company if you have 50 employees if we get the same plan.  The insurance companies look at that as pools of 500 and 50 instead of just one pool of 550.  So, smaller companies pay higher rates, which gets a pass through with lower wages or higher prices for goods and services.  Again, it’s just simple economics.   Companies are not in business to provide jobs.   Companies are in business to make a profit.  I don’t know of a single entrepreneur that starts a company to provide people jobs.  They start them to follow their passion and to make money.  Period.  The bottom line is, if our system is so broken, why do people from all over the world come here for healthcare?  I am afraid that our best and brightest will decide to go into a different field than medicine if the government keeps getting more and more involved.  A few years back, I was seriously thinking about leaving my Engineering Career and going back to medical school to be a Doctor.  A friend who went to church with us, an older gentleman who was an OBGYN and delivered our daughter, said, “Don’t do it.  It isn’t worth it anymore.  Too much legislation and government interference.”  He basically talked me out of it.  I wish he were still alive today to talk to about the Affordable Care Act and what he thinks about it.

At some point, common sense has to prevail and whether you are a Conservative, Liberal, Libertarian, Green, Conservative, Liberal or whatever, the math will still apply to you unless you have a waiver.  When I heard about employers with less than 50 employees would be exempt as would employers with part time employees, I knew what would happen and it has started.  Employers are either cutting back to 49 employees and/or making their employees independent contractors by firing them and rehiring them as a 1099 employee.  This means they have to pay their own taxes and get their own insurance.  In a way, I think that’s GREAT because I have said for some time now that if people have to stroke a check to the government once a quarter instead of having it automatically deducted, there will be a fundamental shift in people’s thinking.  Maybe that will be the impetus to get us to a fair/flat tax finally.  What we are doing by taking away from the people in this country who continually fire up our economic engine to me is nothing more than theft, pure and simple.

I know my blogs are primarily about health and wellness and my Beachbody journey, but I figured this would fit and yes, it is even more important to be healthy now.

Please understand if you’ve read this far, I do believe the system is broken, but, I also believe this legislation is bad.  Very Very bad.

Yoga – P90X and P90X2

Yoga – P90X and P90X2

P90X Yoga

P90X Yoga

I’ll admit it.  I wan’t a huge Yoga fan, especially in the beginning.  My idea of yoga was a bunch of women sitting around, stretching, getting into weird poses that made them look like pretzels and then those crazy OHM things at the end.  I also associated it with Eastern Mysticism and Yogis and just a very strange religion.  Why would a God-fearing, red-blooded, football/baseball loving American Man want to do Yoga?  It just made no sense to me when there were weights to lift, pullups and pushups to do and just general jumping around and getting your heart rate up.  Yoga made no sense to me.

Then, on May 10, 2007 (it was a Thursday and Day 4 of my first round of P90X), I was looking forward to YogaX because I was sore from doing the first 3 days of P90X and I was really looking to getting on the floor with the women and taking it easy and stretching.  It would be a nice relaxing day.  BOY was I mistaken.

The first 5 or so minutes of P90X Yoga is nice.  Standing, stretching, bending at the waist, but then the fun starts.  For the next 40 or so minutes, it’s feet back, pushup upward dog, pushup downward dog, swing your leg up and then between your hands and then hold a pose, etc.  Every time I have sweat “skeeting” off of me.  I HATED Thursdays for 90 days.  And then, during the “Recovery Weeks” of P90X, which there are 3 of in the 13 week period, you do it twice, so, you do a total of 16 Yoga Days during the 90 Day Period.

Here is the funny thing though.  At the end of the 90 Days, much to my surprise, I actually began to love Yoga.  Yoga was indeed the one program where I improved the most.  Sure I could do more pushups and more situps and my cardiovascular endurance improved like crazy.  But to see my balance and coordination improve, and the fact that by the end I was doing all of the pushups with good form and holding the poses the entire time was nothing short of amazing and incredible.  I remember the first morning when I was able to go into plow and shoulder stand and then drop my feet over my head and touch my toes on the ground behind me I was like…is that REALLY the floor I’m touching back there?  It really opens you up and makes you more flexible.  Tony even calls Yoga the “Fountain of Youth”.

Yoga – P90X and P90X2 – Live

My wife and I had the opportunity to go to Hawaii with Tony a little while back.  Before we went to Hawaii, we had the opportunity to workout with Tony in California.  Doing Yoga with Tony live is a new experience.  You don’t know what’s coming next so your mind begins to play tricks on you.  I was ready for it and in great shape but not knowing how long he is going to make you hold a pose is tricky to overcome.  I had gotten used to the DVDs and knew how many breaths I was going to take and based on what he was saying, I could gauge how much longer we had to go.

I’ll never forget in Hawaii, we went into Bridge/Wheel and I couldn’t believe how easy it was for me to get up in that pose and I was holding it and thinking….wow, I’ve arrived.  This is AMAZING!!  I really loved Yoga.  Weird, I know.

The one downfall to P90X Yoga is the time.  It’s 93 minutes with basically the first half of it being Power Yoga and the last half being stretching and ab work.  It’s a mental thing to be able to get through the entire program but every time I do, it’s so worth it.  Tony realized he needed to do a different program so, during the One on One series, he did one called “Fountain of Youth Yoga” and kept the time down to an hour.

Yoga – P90X and P90X2 – X2

P90X2 Yoga

P90X2 Yoga

I was excited when I first got my P90X2 program because I saw there was a new Yoga program in it.  I was also excited to see it was just a tad over an hour and not an hour and a half.  I knew there would be new poses and new moves and I wasn’t disappointed.  Tony took the best of P90X Yoga and used it to make a new X2 Yoga program.  The way he strings the moves together is amazing.  It looks and seems like it would be very easy, but when I started doing it, I found out my body had to get used to a brand new program all over again.

The bottom line is, I love Yoga.  It hurts and I don’t think it will ever be easy for me to get through an entire workout with perfect form, but, it is something that I love the challenge doing.  I have never taken a live Yoga class other than the ones done by Tony but, I plan to soon.  I want to go do some Hot Yoga, Bikram, which is done is a room between 90 and 105 degrees with 40 to 60% humidity.  I hear it’s amazing.

I also have gotten over my feelings of it being a mystical religion workout.  I tell people, I pray all the time during Yoga…mostly that it hurries up and gets over quickly.  Even the Ohms at the end of the workout are fun and relaxing and makes me feel good all over from the vibrations of my voice.

My recommendation is to just do it.  Don’t think it’s some sissy little workout for women.  Give P90X or P90X2 Yoga a shot.  You’ll hate it….but you’ll love it!!

PS – I coach Middle School and JV Football and some days, especially early morning workouts, we do 15 to 20 minutes of Yoga.  Yes,…they HATE Yoga days but now, it has opened up their minds that there really is another world out there.

P90X and P90X2 Challenge Packs are on sale right now.  You can save $25 over the normal price of a Challenge Pack which is already deeply discounted.  Just do it.  You’ll be glad you did.  Contact me and let’s get you started.

Well, it’s actually not my birthday today, but it was a couple of days ago.  I was born on October 9th.  I was 21×2+6.  For those of you who are mathematically challenged, that’s 48.  Someone said “Happy 50th Birthday” and I said…I’m not quite there yet, but I can sure smell it from here.  Funny thing is, I don’t feel old.  I know, 48 isn’t technically old.  With increasing life expectancies from our wonderful health care system, I have a few more years to go barring any accidents or tragedies or serious unexpected illnesses.

The question then becomes a matter of “quality of life”.  I know a lot of people my age that are already acting as though they are in their 70s.  They are overweight/obese and have been that way for most of their adult lives.  As a result, their joints and internal organs have taken a beating trying to keep up with poor nutritional habits and lifestyle.  On the other hand, I know people in their 60s and 70s who are extremely active and can run circles around me.  One that comes immediately to mind that was in the news again recently is Diana Nyad.  Diana just completed the swim from Cuba to Florida.  This was something that had aluded her so many times but she finally did it…at SIXTY FOUR.  Most people would have thrown in the towel, but not Diana.  She’s awesome and is one of my heroes.

This article isn’t really about me or Diana Nyad.  This is about you.  I had someone post on facebook the other day when it was my birthday “Congratulations on another successful trip around the sun!!”  How true that is.  It was another successful trip around the sun.  My question to you though is, how successful was your last trip around the sun?

It’s My Birthday!! – Make it Count!!

When you think back on your last year of life, are you where you thought you would be?  Did you have dreams that went unfulfilled?  Did you have goals you didn’t meet?  Did you accomplish everything you wanted to?  I hope your answer to all that is that you are not where you want to be but I hope that is only because you set such high goals for yourself that it would have taken a near miracle to accomplish them.  So, let’s back up one step.  How are you doing?  I mean, come on, get real….how are you REALLY doing?

Are you better off, the same or worse spiritually?  How about Financially?  Emotionally?  Mentally? Physically?

Here is something that is funny and I’ve seen it again and again and again with people across different societal, racial, economic class, etc.  Fix your physical situation and everything else follows.  Fix your spiritual situation and everything else follows.

Here is what I mean.  When I weighed nearly 300 lbs before finding P90X, everything in my life was a wreck, even my spiritual life.  When I got that under control, and it didn’t happen overnight, everything else seemed to fall into place.  I had been overweight for over 15 years and regardless of what people say, when you’re that heavy for that long, you can’t help but think people look at you differently because they do.  I felt better about myself, my spiritual life improved, I slept better, I began making more money, I looked for opportunities to help people, it was just amazing.

It’s My Birthday!! – With More To Come!!

Most people go through life just existing.  I refuse to do that anymore.  We all have only a certain number of trips to make around the sun as my friend said.  I want every single one of them to count.  That starts by making each and every day the best it can be.  That means I need to be putting good food in my body and making sure to exercise and keep my body in good working order.  The good food starts with Shakeology and the exercise happens with all of the great Beachbody Programs we have.  When your health breaks down, everything else takes a hit as well.  I am excited to think the last half of my life is going to be better than the first half and I’m not sitting around waiting to die, but I’m actively making my life count for something that is bigger and better than me.

In the words if Ferris Beuler – Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Don’t miss life because you don’t stop and look around.  Be the best you can be.  You deserve nothing less.

First Full Round P90X2

First Full Round P90X2

I found P90X back in May of 2007 and started doing it weighing nearly 300 lbs.  I was trying to remember today when we released P90X2 but it was 2 or 3 years ago.  They touted it as the next evolution of P90X.  I thought I was ready for it when I started it and I was.  My main problem is focus.  I had also been doing P90X+ and had some shoulder problems also.  So, when I started it, I didn’t count on all of the moves that irritated my shoulder a bit, so, I put it back on the shelf thinking I’d not do it again.  I let a friend of mine borrow it and went back to doing some P90X and other programs like Slim in 6, Insanity and Turbo Jam and mixing it up with other things I enjoyed.

Well, as you may or may not have heard, P90X3 is coming in December…December 10th to be exact.  So, I was challenged by my good friend and pal who is in P90X3, Susan Lucy, to do a full round of P90X2.  I told her I didn’t know if my shoulders would hold up and that I had attempted it in the past but didn’t really enjoy it then.

Since that time though, I had my shoulder fixed by a 10th Degree Blackbelt who assured me that most of my shoulder problems were caused by a lack of a range of motion and showed me some great stretches dating back to LONG ago.  Sure enough, in one afternoon, really within about 5 minutes, he “fixed” my shoulder problems.  So, now, I’m hitting P90X2 after doing a round of Focus T25 and 3 weeks of The Ultimate Reset.

First Full Round of P90X2 – So Far

I will likely write a full review of what happens with me during P90X2 soon, but in the meantime, I had to write about my progress with P90X2 so far.

P90X & P90X2

P90X & P90X2

It starts with 3 weeks, more if you need it of Phase I which gets you ready for what is to come.  Tony Horton, creator and founder of the P90 series will even tell you that P90X2 is a graduate program of P90X.  Although I haven’t done P90X in awhile, my base of fitness is more than ready for this and I have all the equipment I need, including my pullup bar.

I noticed during my first week that my balance and coordination is way off from where it used to be.  But today being Day 9, during “The World’s Greatest Stretch”, my balance was spot on and I felt GREAT.  I’ve noticed that although my balance and coordination isn’t where it should be, it is coming back to me rapidly.

One thing P90X2 works on is balance, coordination, agility and almost all of the moves have some sort of synergistic qualities so you aren’t working just one major muscle group but several body parts at the same time.  I’m loving it so far.

First Full Round of P90X2 – What am I expecting?

Well, you have heard me say I’m not an underwear model.  I am just on the journey and I’m doing the best I can do with what I have.  But, I plan on being the best me I can be.  My goal is to get in the best shape I can get into and complete the entire 90 Days of P90X2.  It’s just a goal that most people can achieve.  I’m not as concerned about losing weight as I am about trimming a little body fat percentage and getting ready for P90X3.  P90X3 isn’t a graduate program and according to Tony, all but 1 person in the test group lost 10%+ body fat, so, I’m totally stoked to see what’s going to happen.

So, what are your goals?  What are you doing to get in and stay in shape?  Why are you doing it?  I’m doing it for my family because I want to be around for them but I’m also doing it for me.  I know if I’m in great shape and look and feel good, I walk faster, talk faster and I’m just a much better person to be around.

What are you going to do for the rest of your life?  Is it going to be the best it can be or are you just going to survive?  Let me help you get to where you want and need to be.  Maybe P90X2 isn’t your thing, but I bet we have a workout program to stimulate you that you will enjoy and come back to again and again.  We call it the “soul mate” workout.  Couple it with Shakeology and how can you possibly lose?

Let me help you find your Soul Mate workout.

P90X3 Is Coming!!

P90X3 Is Coming!!

P90X3 is Coming

P90X3 is Coming

Not long ago, I talked about Focus T25 and how it is such an incredible workout.  Shaun T. has taken some of the moves of Insanity and distilled them into 25 minutes a day with no breaks.  I did that workout all the way through and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Well now, this December 10th, 2013, P90X3 is Coming!!  I’m pretty stinkin’ fired up about it too.  We got a taste of it at Leadership out in California a couple of weeks ago and I had the privilege of getting my hands on a disk that was an advance copy of the P90X3 – Warrior workout and it is so much fun!!

I started my Beachbody journey with P90X and lost a good bit of weight and became a Beachbody fan.  Since then, I’ve done all of the workouts in the P90 family.  I’ve done P90, P90X, P90X+, P90X2, Tony Horton’s One on One and now, I’m stoked about P90X3 coming out.

P90X3 is going to be 20 workouts that are 30 minutes in length.  Unlike Focus T25 where there are no breaks, there will be some breaks built into P90X3 but they will be well needed breaks.

P90X3 isn’t going to be a graduate program.  P90X2 really needs to be done AFTER P90X to make sure a good base of fitness is there.  However, with P90X3, you don’t need to have completed any of the other programs to make it work.  Did I mention I’m excited about it?  From what we’ve seen and heard from Tony Horton, P90X3 is going to be able to be done by someone just getting started with fitness and they will be able to get as much out of it as someone with incredible fitness.  P90X2 has moves in it that are geared toward someone with that baseline of fitness already.

P90X3 is Coming December 10th

Unlike P90X2 and Les Mills Combat that had preorders, there will be no preorders for P90X3.  You will simply have to order it on December 10th.  From what we understand, they are expecting to sell out and for the program to be on backorder.  We were told by Carl Daikeler, the CEO and founder of Beachbody that priority will be given to customers and new Coaches ordering Challenge Packs.

Since preorders are not being taken, I am compiling a list of people who want to order P90X3 and I will be sending out emails to those people 2 weeks, 1 week and the day that the program hits.

If you would like to be included on my list, please email me at  I would love to get you more information on it.  In the meantime, we are still putting together Challenge Groups now because, even though you don’t need an incredible level of fitness, there is no reason to wait until it gets here.  If you want to be included in a Challenge Group, let me know.  I would love to put you in a group of us that are doing P90X, P90X2, Turbo Fire, Insanity etc.  We call it Preppers for X3.  It’s so much fun.  Contact me and let me know what you need to know to move you forward!!
