According to emedicine, as of December, 2012, approximately 21-24% of American children and adolescents are overweight, and another 16-18% is obese.  These rates have been steadily climbing although there have been indications that among certain ethnic groups in certain locations in the U.S., there has been a slight decline.  With the availability of relatively cheap, fast food coupled with our fast lifestyle this trend isn’t likely to reverse itself any time soon.  If people eat breakfast at all, it’s something processed or sugary.  Lunch in our schools isn’t the best in the world as documented by Jaime Oliver and reported by WebMD.  It used to be that overweight and obese children in schools were the anomaly and usually meant that the child didn’t have to work and their parents were relatively rich.  Now this was years and years ago.  As we’ve begun to get further and further away from farm living and working outdoors, the rates of obesity have gone up proportionally.  Kids don’t go outside to play anymore.  They sit inside and watch TV, do their homework and play on gaming consoles for most of the day.  The average child watches about 4 hours of TV a day, on school days.  Also, the nutrients in food aren’t what they used to be.  The body knows what it needs and wants.  If a child eats and doesn’t get the right proportion of nutrients, even though there may be plenty of food, it will send signals that it needs more until it gets the fuel it needs.  Parents have not taken responsibility for their children and in a lot of cases, children follow their parents example.  Their parents aren’t active and don’t workout so why should they?  It’s truly a matter of “like father like son” as we’ve heard so many times.  It’s time to break that cycle.

As soon as I saw Dr. Mark Cheng on stage at the Beachbody Coach Summit a couple of years ago, I knew Tai Cheng was for real.  After doing Tai Cheng I knew I would be doing a Tai Cheng Review.  I had to.  I have also told you I Love Martial Arts.  I had taken Taekwondo and had messed around with other forms until I found a great instructor and started taking Classical Jujitsu.  I loved all of that and I knew a little about Tai Chi but I didn’t know much.  I knew it was an art form that focused on slow movements but also could be explosive when actually used in a combative form.  So, I was intrigued to find out more about Tai Chi through the program Dr. Cheng created called Tai Cheng by Beachbody.  The focus of the program is balance, coordination, mobility, agility and vitality.   There are times of slow and controlled breathing followed by slow movements.  As Dr. Cheng says, you have to just let go and concentrate in the moment.  By learning to put the Tai Cheng movements together, you’ll experience increased balance and strength, improved joint function, a wider range of motion, less stiffness, greater flexibility, and an overall feeling of natural energy and well-being.  I have done Tai Chi with an instructor since doing Tai Cheng and it is for real.  Dr. Cheng shows the application of the movements so you can visualize an opponent.  I decided to do Tai Cheng while doing the Ultimate Reset and not being able to workout hard.  So, for my Tai Cheng Review, my suggestion is, do it.

Yes, I’m doing a Turbo Jam Review.  Don’t act so shocked!!  When you think about getting in shape, most people think about going running or hitting the treadmill or an elliptical in the gym.  I had someone ask me the other day if they should get an elliptical or a treadmill.  My answer was simple.  Get the treadmill.  A treadmill can hold a lot more towels when you use it for a week and then start using it as a towel rack.  Of course, I was being a bit sarcastic (insert shocked face here), but it’s true for most people.  I know because my wife talked me into getting a treadmill several years ago.  She used it for about a week.  I used it a lot more than she did but it was just boring to me.  I would run for awhile and then that was it.  I much preferred running on the open road where there is scenery and changing conditions, but I do know that a lot of people LOVE running on a treadmill or an elliptical.  They are a strange breed for sure.  But, there are options out there if you think you fall into that category of people who will get a piece of equipment like that and then not use it.  The answer is simple.  Get a Beachbody program and workout at home and pick something that is fun.  Beachbody has a lot of great workouts and it may take looking at a few but there is one out there that we call your “soul mate” workout.  When I think of a fun workout, even though I’m a “manly man”, the first one that comes to mind is Turbo Jam.  So, of course my Turbo Jam Review will include some fun, right?

Turbo Jam Review – My Impressions

My Turbo Jam Review wouldn’t be complete without my experience.  When I did my first Turbo Jam workouts, it was almost on a dare from my wife.  I wanted to find out what it was about because she was doing it and loving it.  She told me I’d love it too.  So, I told her I wanted to do some Cardio.  She handed me “Cardio Party”.  I did OK with it, but truthfully,  I didn’t break a sweat.  By the time I figured out what the moves were, she had moved onto something else.  I told my wife and she laughed and told me to do “Learn and Burn”.  I watched it and had my A-HA moments on the moves.  After that, I went back in and put in Cardio Party again the next day and…WOW!!  I not only broke a sweat, I broke out into a flop sweat!!  And, yes, I do have to admit.  It was fun!!  I have to admit, still though, that Turbo Jam isn’t my soul mate workout, but it is fun.  The music is off the hook.  The workouts are low impact also and she throws in some Capoeira moves that are fun to do.  Have I mentioned this workout is fun?

Chalene Johnson makes sure everything is fun and lighthearted, and I love it when she calls me “Baby Doll” because of course she was thinking of me when she said it to the camera!  The mood of the workout is serious though.  Oh, and have I mentioned it’s fun?  I would love to think I look good dancing, but this is a workout I make sure I do when no one is around and watching.  I still occasionally pop a DVD in and do it, but I have to be in the mood for a Turbo Jam workout.  I love it when the sirens go off and it’s Turbo Time.  I really think this set of workouts would be invaluable in your collection.

A lot of people are afraid of P90X.  I guess I was just so tired of being overweight and not happy with myself that I was ready to try about anything.  You’ve read what i said about how I found P90X.  I’ve also told you what you can expect with P90X.  But I haven’t really done a P90X review yet.   So, here it is.

P90X was developed by Tony Horton for Beachbody.  It was a followup to the P90 program that he had developed earlier.  In the old days before P90X, people did P90 multiple times and they kept asking “What’s Next?”  So, Tony developed the program with Muscle Confusion in mind.  The theory, which has been proven, is that muscles adapt when you work them the same way all of the time.  Changing routines is what causes muscle growth and not allowing them to adapt is what gives them stamina and builds them.  It really is common sense when you think about it.  What most people do though, is go to the gym and they have their favorite thing either because it’s easy for them to do, they know how to do it, or they just don’t want to try something different.  P90X forces you out of that comfort zone in a major way.  There are also two different versions, lean and classic.  I always recommend classic for a lot of reasons, the main one being, resistance burns fat in many people better than cardio.  Most people think to burn fat, you have to do cardio and that simply isn’t true.  Muscle burns fat just sitting there so, doing resistance will add muscle, increase metabolism and give you a sleek and slender look you are looking for.

You need to know, as part of my P90X review, that P90X is hard. It’s supposed to be.  To get the best use of the program, I recommend a set of quick change dumbbells.  A pullup bar is also needed for the pullups that you’ll do.  Don’t worry if you can’t do a pullup.  You can put your feet in a chair and modify them.  I also recommend getting your chin over the bar and then take your feet out of the chair and slowly lower yourself.  Pushups can be done from your knees if you have to.  In the beginning, that’s what I did, but I made progress fast.  Tony shows how to modify all of the moves.  You can also do the program with resistance bands if you don’t have the dumbbells.  To get the absolute best out of the program, I highly encourage you to get them though.  My P90X Review wouldn’t be complete without recommending the P90X Recovery Drink for after the workout and P90X Protein Bars.

P90X Review – How is the Program Set Up?

I am not writing this Slim in 6 Review because of something I’ve read.  I’m writing this because, yes, I’ve done Slim in 6.  Slim in 6 is a program that I didn’t think I would like, and seemed a bit hokey.  It seemed like the girl thing to do.  Slim in 6 wasn’t something I really wanted to do but as a Beachbody Coach, I thought I needed to in order to get a feel for the programs so I could either recommend and/or help other people through it.  But, it was kind of like Mikey in the Life Commercial.  I not only liked it, I LOVED it.  And, I still do.  There are times now when I want to switch things up and do a double on a day or something like that and I still will pop in a Slim in 6 DVD and do it.  I have also done the Slim Series but I doubt I do a review on that.  I may one day.  It’s basically just ramped up versions of Slim in 6 though and I highly recommend it.  So, for this Slim in 6 Review, I will focus on the basics of Slim in 6.

Slim in 6 Review – What to Expect

Slim in 6 was filmed in a studio setting that isn’t what you’d expect.  It’s all about working out and real working out though.  For Slim in 6, Debbie Siebers starts you off with lunges and squats and follows it up with more lunges and squats.  The good new is it works.  The bad news is, it hurts, in a good way.  But, everything is modifiable and for me, it was good to know that it was fairly easy on my knees.  In the beginning I couldn’t bend all the way down and didn’t have the flexibility I needed to move the way they do in the videos.  But the more I did it, the more I found myself pushing and getting the most out of it.  The program basically starts with a relatively short 36 minute session of Start It Up.  Once you start feeling good and you can do the program with medium intensity and relative ease, you move on to Ramp It Up which is 57 minutes long.  After a couple of weeks, you should be ready to move on to Burn It Up.  The thing that surprised me is the way she moves you through the exercises.  You start standing and doing lunges and squats and progress to upper body work with resistance bands for upper body muscle tone.  Then, you go to the floor work that hits your glutes, quads and hamstrings in ways you can’t imagine.  I tell people, Slim in 6 makes my eyeballs sweat because men don’t cry.  It’s tough.  What’s funny though is, she does it in a way that’s enjoyable, as sick as that sounds.  It’s great when you can push through all of the floor work.  Even though it felt like you could fry an egg on my butt, once I pushed through the pain, I found I could do more reps and everything did start to firm up.  If there is one program that is fast and enjoyable that you can see nearly immediate results from, I would have to say it would be Slim in 6.  Coupled with Shakeology in the form or a Slim in 6 Challenge Pack, you will not be disappointed in what you see.  You will begin to see the fat melt away, your thighs, hips and butt getting slimmer and firmer, and you will feel more confident about yourself.  The Slim in 6 program also has all three components needed for a balanced workout.  You will have cardio, resistance and flexibility.  The Slim & 6-Pack Ab workout is also second to none.  Also, we have met and worked out with Debbie Siebers live and we’ve had the opportunity to hang out with her at Beachbody events.  My suggestion for my Slim in 6 Review is, if you are thinking about it, knowing we are headed fast toward Swimsuit Season, get this program with the Challenge Pack.  You will not regret it.  Contact me and let’s talk about it!!

As a part of my Insanity Review, I think it is only fair for you to know I have not done a total 60 days with Insanity.  There are a lot of reasons for that.  I was excited and a little fearful when it came out.  I have done all of the DVDs and I’ve done over 30 days with it when I started incorporating other programs in with it.  So, I feel like I can write a decent Insanity Review because of that.  I knew I was in good shape because I had been doing P90X and some other Beachbody Programs.  Insanity was totally different than anything else Beachbody had ever produced.  In fact, it was totally different than anything ANYBODY had ever put out.  People know about Interval Training.  Most people, when they go to a gym or go out for a run, go at a constant pace.  They get on the treadmill or elliptical or go out and run and they never change their routine or their pace.  The heart rate goes up and stays there.  With Interval Training, most programs go at a slow pace with short bursts of intensity.  Insanity stands that on it’s head and goes for long periods of intensity with short rest periods.  Shaun T. really pulled out all the stops with this program.  The first set of warmup exercises were all I needed to know I was in for a tough ride.  The fit test showed me that even though I was in shape, this was a different program I was getting involved with and I knew I was going to love it.  I had to stop and take a break during the first 10 minutes.  I remember going to the pool and talking to one of the lifeguards and I remember telling him, if he can find anybody he knows and they will come to my house and we put in the first DVD, if they can hang with it and do all of the reps at the speed they do it on the DVD, I will give them $1,000.  It was that hard.  There is no way you can do that at the pace they go unless you have been doing this particular program for awhile.  After I did the first day of Insanity, I couldn’t stand on my tip toes for 3 days.  My calves got burnt UP.  So, for my Insanity Review, I can simply tell you, if you want to get a great workout in and have fun and sweat and do something REAL, do Insanity.  It’s crazy fun.

 Insanity Review – Who Should Do It

As a part of this Insanity Review, you should know it is high intensity and high impact.  If you have heart problems, back or knee problems or anything that will cause further injury or hurt you if you are jumping, Insanity may not be for you.  Consult your physician if you have any doubts.  As always, it can be modified.  I said at the beginning of this Insanity Review that I have never done a full 60 days of Insanity.  The reason is because about 30 days in, my knees start to bother me so, I listen to my body and back off.  I’m a little older at 47 than some of the people who get after it and do Insanity full speed.   I have also not been kind to my knees in the past with some of the activities I did in my younger years from football to skiing to volleyball.  So, my knees start to bother me with all of the impact.  So, I back it down and do something else and then come back to it as a hybrid workout program where I incorporate the Insanity workouts with other things I’m doing.  I love Insanity but my body isn’t cut out to be a cheetah.  I’m built more like a Rhino so Body Beast has been GREAT for me.  I do still love Insanity though.  That is why I wanted to write an Insanity Review.  My recommendation for you is, if you are interested in getting it, we have a 30-day money back guarantee and coupled with the P90X Recovery Drink and Shakeology, you have everything you need to be successful.  And of course, I will be your Coach so how can you go wrong.  So that’s my Insanity Review.  Contact me and let’s get you moving on a new you with Insanity!!

Body Beast is a relatively new program.  I started with P90X when I found the Beachbody programs, but I am starting tomorrow with my 3rd round of Body Beast.  So, I figured this was a good time to do a Body Beast Review.  I have done several rounds of P90X and many other Beachbody programs.  I worked out for a couple of years hard with P90X and I LOVED the results and it was a great place to start.  I highly recommend P90X also.  I really think I will do more 90 day rounds of P90X and/or Insanity.  However, when Body Beast came out, I was totally stoked.  I was a little afraid going in because I hadn’t lifted weights in so long.  This was exactly what my body needed though.  Flexibility is easy enough to incorporate by stretching before and after the workouts because the workouts are relatively short.  I have told people I had tried to embrace my inner cheetah with P90X, and my inner gazelle with Insanity, but now it was time to embrace my inner rhino.  For me, it was time to get in great shape and transform my body by putting on muscle.  I had lost down to about 220 lbs doing P90X and P90X+ but I don’t think I looked good.  I actually feel better now than I did then, but it took P90X to get me to where I needed to be so Body Beast could do it’s thing.  As part of this Body Beast Review, it’s important to remember that we are all different and our bodies respond differently to different workouts and nutrition programs.  Should women get Body Beast and should women lift weights?  YES!!  Muscles are sexy, on men and women.  Don’t worry about bulking up too much as a woman.  Women have typically 10 times less testosterone than men, so, you won’t look like the incredible hulk and, if you are not happy with the muscles you start seeing, stop working them.  They will go away, I promise.

Body Beast Review – Equipment

My Body Beast Review of course has to cover the equipment needed.  I already had the Bowflex Selecttech 552 dumbbells I purchased to do P90X.  I also had the Beachbody/P90X pullup bar.  What I didn’t have that was recommended was an adjustable bench and the EZ Curl bar.  After thinking about it and talking to some people, I decided to go ahead and get the EZ Curl bar offered by Beachbody.  I had a big stability ball that came when I ordered P90X2, so I decided to use that instead of the bench.  I could have just used the dumbbells and not gotten the EZ Curl bar but I wanted the best results possible.  There are modifications using the dumbbells instead of the bar and a resistance band doing pull downs instead of the pullup bar.  So, it is somewhat modifiable.  The weights you use are basically determined by what you can do.  If you want to do it “right” and get everything you need, you’ll need dumbbells (up to 50 lbs max to start most likely), an adjustable bench (stability ball), EZ Curl Bar with weights (25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb plates), a pullup bar.

Body Beast Review – The Supplements

When I ordered it, I did basically what I did with P90X and ordered the recommended supplements with it.  I already had shakeology that I also used but I ordered the Fuel Shot, Creatine, Suma Root and Whey Base Shake.  The Fuel Shot is an after workout drink that replenishes what your body lost during the workout and helps rebuild your tissues and muscle fibers.  Creatine is also taken after the workout and pulls water into the muscles and tissues to help build muscle fibers and help with the healing process after the workout.  Suma Root helps with natural testosterone production and helps with muscle building.  Whey Base Shake is the supplement I added to the shakeology and helps develop muscles as well.  I love all of the supplements available for Body Beast.

Body Beast Review – The Workouts

You can’t have a Body Beast Review without talking about the workouts, right?  I have a bad shoulder and starting out slow and building up, I never really had any problems with these workouts at all.  In fact, my shoulder feels better than it has in a long time.  I’m stronger and not doing all those pushups for a little while really helped it I think.

BEAST BASICS: – Sagi gives you an overview of the complete Body Beast™ system, starting with basic moves and the science behind the program, and moving to two essentials of getting big—nutrition and supplementation.
