If you look at the word BREAKFAST, it is really simple. The first part of the word is BREAK and the second part of the word is FAST. If you are getting enough sleep, then you are sleeping for 7 to 8 hours, especially if you are working out. You need good uninterrupted sleep in order for your body to heal and to function at it’s highest level. Therefore, if you didn’t eat for an hour or more prior to going to bed and then you sleep for 7 to 8 hours, your body has literally been FASTING for that amount of time. Can you imagine going to work or school or going through your entire day without eating? Most people are starving by the time lunch rolls around and they plan their work day around lunch. At my old Engineering firm, we would literally start talking about where we were going to lunch sometimes before 10 AM and most of us ate breakfast.
So, when you wake up, it is the equivalent of going from at least 8 to 5 and not eating a thing, not even drinking water. So, your body has literally been in fast mode and when you wake up, your metabolism wants to get cranked up but it can’t because now it is in starvation mode. Your body wants you to break the fast (breakfast). I’ve heard people say they couldn’t eat breakfast because it made them feel nauseated. Maybe that is true if you are eating heavy or greasy foods but something that your body is craving should not make you feel uneasy at all. If nothing else, breakfast can be something light or fruits and is just what the Doctor ordered and I mean that quite literally.
Eat Breakfast – Cuz Your Mother Said So
I’ve told you bits and pieces about me growing up. My Mom cooked 3 meals a day when I was growing up. One of my FAVORITES was always breakfast. For breakfast we typically had grits, eggs, bacon or sausage and toast every morning before school. She would cook breakfast occasionally during the summer but ALWAYS during the school year. Saturdays we fended for ourselves and we ate cereal with milk most of the time. Sundays she would usually make pancakes. I couldn’t imagine going until noon without food. When I went to college, freshmen were basically forced to eat breakfast. We had formation and marched to breakfast. As an upperclassman, breakfast was optional, unless you were in charge of making sure the freshmen got there. A lot of times I would volunteer to march the freshmen to the mess hall because I was going to eat breakfast anyway.
I RARELY missed breakfast, even in college as an upperclassman because I knew instinctively it was important. I knew I had a much better morning and wasn’t as grouchy and actually got through the day much better if I ate breakfast. I won’t bore you with the details but you can google it for yourself. There have been numerous studies on children and adults who eat breafast vs. people who don’t eat breakfast. There are even studies that show that people who eat breakfast tend to be healthier and lose weight. The reasons are varied but if you think about it, if you don’t eat breakfast, you are starving at lunch, literally, and you tend to overeat. Most Americans now have desk or sedentary jobs. They definitely don’t work on the farm like I did growing up where they burn a ton of calories. Buffets are everywhere and if the buffets aren’t hit, the fast food joints are where you get loaded up with saturated fats and sugars. Those foods make you feel full, but they don’t give your body what you need. With a good, healthy breakfast and then a decent snack, you won’t feel the need to overeat like mad at lunch. Breakfast is important for those reasons as well as to help your body maintain a balance. People think if they skip breakfast, they are cutting calories and will lose weight, but it is actually self defeating because your body burns fewer calories and then stores everything once you start eating again.
Breakfast – Do Something Easy
When you think of breakfast, what do you think? Do you think grits, eggs, bacon toast pancakes, fruit, bagel and cream cheese? Or, do you even go the more unhealthy route than that and go for the sausage and egg biscuit at the local fast food joint while choking down a cup of coffee? I know for me, it was usually a biscuit and coffee or stopping in at the store for grits and eggs on the way to the office. One thing for sure though was I was going to eat breakfast. That wasn’t even a question.
