Frustration | Jay Floyd Fitness

Have you ever felt Frustration?  OK,that was a stupid question, right?  Of COURSE you’ve felt frustration.  We all get frustrated.  What we get frustrated about and how we deal with it varies from person to person.  The reasons for frustration are as limitless and various as snowflakes.   For instance, have you ever gotten a product from the store and it’s fully encased in plastic.  You spend 15 minutes clawing and chewing at it and get several plastic cuts.  Then, you go get a steak knife and saw at it for a bit.  You can feel the frustration growing in you.  As a final straw, you get the industrial strength scissors (while contemplating dynamite) and finally, you get the package open, sometimes without damaging the product inside.  That is something that nearly everyone has experienced.  Frustration can also happen when you’ve followed your favorite sports team through the season and they either never win a game or get to the championship game and blow it doing something stupid.  Maybe you get frustrated with the officials when they make bad calls that potentially cost your team the game.

Frustration is an emotion that we don’t count on and don’t want.  Frustration is typically tied emotionally to something we really love or have worked hard for that doesn’t go as planned or is out of our control.  Sometimes frustration can be tied to something we CAN control and then that can be doubly frustrating but that typically doesn’t get into full blown frustration mode, because we can control it.  Things that we can’t control cause the most frustration, at least for me.  It is especially so when I’m doing something and depending on other people to do something and they either don’t come through like they said they would or just flat lie to me.  THAT is the cause of my biggest frustration.

Frustration – Where it comes from

I think frustration for me comes from trusting people.  I was raised to do something, do it right, do what I said I was going to do when I said I was going to do it.  I was also taught to not give up at the first speed bump, so, when people don’t follow through with what they say they are going to do just because it gets hard, it drives me CRAZY.  I just don’t understand how people can say one thing and do another.  I know this isn’t a new phenomenon and I always love giving people the benefit of the doubt when they say something.  I want to believe and trust them, but I do have to admit, over the years I’ve become a bit jaded and skeptical with people.  Being a landlord with investment properties has compounded frustration emotions in me.  I don’t know what to say to people like that and as a manager or a leader, I tend to do most things myself instead of empowering and trusting people.  You expect something to happen the way you want it to but when it doesn’t, it’s a source of frustration.  I know.  I’ve been there.  I got more than the T-Shirt.  Just remember, I know this will be a shocker, the world doesn’t revolve around you and people are people and will do, generally, what makes THEM happy.  If you want people to do what you want them to do, you have to, in some way, convince them it’s in their best interest.  That can be fear, reward, love, hate, whatever you use, but it has to be focused in the direction you want them to go.

Frustration – It can be beneficial!!

I am a Beachbody Coach.  I have told you how I found P90X and how it has changed my life.  I became a Coach to help people get in shape and lose weight just like I did and the fact that I get to make money doing it is just AMAZING!!  But, in order to make money, you have to find people or help people develop into the kind of people who are willing and able to help others get in shape and lose weight also.  It’s frustrating to me when people don’t see the same vision I do of how the world can change if everyone would get on board and just workout a little every day and eat not perfectly but just better.  I have had people tell me they were going to lose weight and get in shape and then, they won’t even answer me when I e-mail or text them because they fell off the wagon and quit.  Frustration sets in.  I’ve also had them get involved and tell me they were going to tear the business up as a Coach and then they disappeared.  More Frustration.  I can’t count the number of times I’ve had a fellow Coach tell me they are in frustration mode because they have people get involved and then those people do absolutely nothing with the business.  They don’t even share it with their friends and neighbors, much less with strangers.  BUT, frustration can be beneficial.  Frustration channeled in the right direction will lead to progress if you let it.  If  you aren’t doing anything, there is no frustration.  I know plenty of Beachbody Coaches who aren’t frustrated at all because they aren’t doing anything.  If you build the Beachbody coaching business, I can promise you that you will experience frustration.  The same as working out and eating right.  I know plenty of people who have absolutely no frustration with their fitness journey because, they have no journey.  They sit on the couch and eat crap all day long.

I remember hearing a story of a Farmer and his Dog.  The Dog was sitting on the porch howling.  The Farmer’s friend asked what was wrong with the Dog.  The Farmer said the Dog was sitting on a nail.  The friend asked why the Dog didn’t move.  The Farmer said when it gets painful enough he will.

When your frustration gets bad enough, one of two things will happen.  You will either quit or you will figure out how to do what you want to do better with the right people.  The winners figure it out and the losers quit every time.  Don’t be a loser.  Embrace the frustration as you doing something others can’t or won’t and figure it out.  Get a mentor and do what they do.  I’m not the brightest bulb on the tree and I realize that, but I am willing to work.  They say find someone who has done what you want to do and then duplicate it and outwork them.  That is all I’ve done and it has paid off like crazy.  Frustration can be beneficial, but you have to embrace it.  Life is full of frustration.  Get ready for it and MASTER it, or frustration will crush you like a bug.
