Is Insanity Hard?
I’m going to give you the bad, followed by the good with Insanity, so, make sure you read all of this. Bad news first, right? Also, watch the video at the end of this.
Is Insanity Hard? Let’s look at the name….
Um, yes. Insanity is hard. But, it was designed to be hard. It is High Intensity Interval Training to the MAX. The first 10 minutes of the warmup will smoke most people. Here is the Insanity warmup. First round is half speed and every movement is 30 seconds. You start with jogging in place, then go to jumping jacks, then back and forth “heismans”, then, back and forth “double heismans”, then butt kicks, then high knees, then “mummy kicks” where your legs are straight and your arms scissor back and forth parallel to the ground with your joints being stiff. Then, you repeat each movement for another 30 seconds and go 3/4 speed. Then, you do each movement for another 30 seconds and go as hard as you can go. The first time I did it I was sucking wind after the first couple of minutes. Most people can’t make it through the warmup for Insanity without pausing or taking a break. But, here is the good news. If you could do everything perfectly, there would be no need for Insanity because you would already be in shape, right? So, don’t worry about that.
So, Is Insanity Hard? The warmup is hard, but you’ll get through it!! After the warmup, you do a bit of a stretch. Then, depending on which program you are doing, you go through a roller coaster ride of high intensity, high impact cardio with some upper body moves thrown in. Again, typically, you do 3 or 4 moves at half speed, a little 30 second rest, repeat those moves at 3/4 speed, a 30 second rest and then repeat those moves at full speed. Then, the moves he has you do change and then toward the end of the workout, some upper body moves like pushups or mountain climbers or tricep pushups are thrown in for upper body resistance. It’s a pretty good mix. Some of the workouts are harder than others. They are designed to be that way, and as you progress through the entire roughly 60 days and there is change, you will start to feel yourself getting less winded as you go. The bad news is, as you get stronger and in better shape, you may actually find yourself pushing harder and possibly even getting more sore as you progress through the workouts. My cankles were so sore I could not even touch them. If you aren’t familiar with cankles, that is the part of the leg between the calf and the ankle. I didn’t even know I had muscles in that part of my leg. But, Insanity caused me to become VERY familiar with them. After my first day with Insanity, I literally couldn’t stand on my tip toes for 3 days. After a week, when I say I couldn’t touch my lower legs, I mean they were literally sore to the touch, not just when I walked around on them. You are going to be sore and tired. You can count on it, but the results happen fast…so, that is the good news. Is Insanity Hard? You bet it is. That’s the bad news.
Is Insanity Hard? – The Good News!
Is Insanity Hard? Yes it is!! That is the Good News!! What…you say…how is that good news? Well, as I said earlier, if you get the Insanity program, and you can do everything on the DVDs perfectly, and keep up with Shaun T. and not break a sweat, frankly, you would have wasted your money because you don’t need the program. BUT, if you are sweating bullets, and pausing the DVD and pushing yourself, and feeling a bit dizzy, nauseated and want to cry, then, this program is doing what it is supposed to do for you. Change is hard. Nobody likes change. When you push your body, it will change and sometimes, your body will push back. There is a lot of comfort in sitting on the couch and watching TV. There is no challenge there. But, when you get up and do something and challenge yourself, it is amazing what will happen. You will not only change physically, but you will also be changing your mindset and that will change you emotionally and also spiritually. You will know you are doing something other people are not willing to do. Insanity will challenge you and that is good news also. Then, the funny thing is, as you are walking around like you have a corn cobb up your butt because you’re so sore, people will ask you why you’re limping or what is wrong with you. Then, you will break out in hysterical laughter and tell them you’re insane, because you’re doing insanity. And, the great news is, you will LOVE the way you feel, sore…tired…and all.
