P90X – What to Expect
If you haven’t heard of P90X by now, you are truly living under a rock. The infomercials have been running now for several years now. You have heard me say that I hadn’t worked out seriously in about 15 years when I saw the P90X Infomercial. I saw it and it made sense to me, but, I knew it was Extreme (that is what the X stands for). I knew if I ordered it that I would have to be committed to it. I knew it wasn’t something that could just sit in the box and I also knew if I ordered it, I would be vested in it and I would have to do it. A know several people who got burned copies from friends and because it’s free, they weren’t invested in it and they didn’t do anything with it. Anyway, when I saw it, I knew it was real, having graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. Muscle Confusion to avoid a plateau made perfect sense to me. I knew people who had been going going to gyms and working out and running on the treadmills and they would lose weight and then plateau, get frustrated and quit and then they were even more unhealthy when the weight came back on. So, when I saw it I was excited and afraid at the same time, so, I didn’t order it. I did some research on it online. This was 2007. We have many many more success stories than we had then. So, I pondered it for a week. The next weekend, I saw the infomercial again and I told my wife “This is what I’ve been talking about.” She said, “You won’t do it.” So, I immediately ordered it. Had she not said that, I may not have ordered it. But, not only did I order the program, after talking to my coach, I knew I wanted to do it and do it big and do it right and get results, so, I got the P90X Results & Recovery Formula (helps rebuild muscle and keeps you from being so sore), the Meal Replacement Shake (we didn’t have Shakeology back then), Activit Vitamins, the Pullup Bar and I went out and found a set of used Bowflex Selecttech 552 dumbbells. I was in. I HAD to do this for not only me, but for my family. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and miserable….and fat.
What Equipment will you NEED for P90X?
Well, what I would suggest is getting the P90X Challenge Pack. The P90X Challenge Pack will come with the Shakeology flavor of your choice (Greenberry, Chocolate, Vegan Chocolate or Vegan Tropical Strawberry – I’m a Chocolate Guy, fyi). You will also need something for resistance such as bands or dumbbells. Bands will work fine in the beginning, especially if you haven’t worked out in awhile. You will also need a place to secure the bands overhead (I don’t recommend a ceiling fan or shower rod) for doing pulldowns that simulate pullups. So, in the beginning, you can get by with resistance bands and a place to secure them overhead, even over a door will work. If you REALLY want to get after it like I did, I would HIGHLY suggest getting the Pullup Bar from Beachbody. It hangs in a standard doorway and doesn’t have to be screwed in if you don’t want it to and a set of dumbbells. I like the Bowflex Selecttechs and I have the 552s. They go up to 52.5 lbs and start at 5. The are PERFECT for P90X.
So, What Can You Expect with P90X?
You can expect the ride of your life. We all know instinctively that running on a treadmill alone won’t do it and it is hard to stay motivated to workout on your own at home. I was one of those guys that didn’t think a workout at home was possible off of the TV. But, I’m telling you. Something MAGICAL happens when you put in that DVD. The people on there become your friends and at first, you can’t keep up with them and it’s frustrating. You get sore. And then over time, it gets better and then, you start doing more pullups and more pushups than they are doing and you don’t need a chair anymore for pullups and you can make it all the way through without doing pushups from your knees (I know that’s a run-on sentence, but it works for me). It is so empowering to make it through a 90 day program and know that you did it and then to look in the mirror or your before/after pictures and SEE the changes. Just WOW!!
So, it is basically set up in three phases. Each phase has 3 or 4 weeks of working out and then a recovery week. Also, each week contains elements of resistance, stretching and cardio that will keep your body guessing and not allow it to plateau. You will be sore. Expect it. But, showers with alternating hot and cold water, drinking lots of water, lots of stretching, epsom salt baths, and P90X Results & Recovery Formula will help. If you can, get a massage. Once those first 2 weeks go by, you will be a little sore during the program, but not as sore as you will be in the first couple of weeks. Like I said, P90X has been incredible for me and I can’t IMAGINE where I’d be if I hadn’t ordered it. My suggestion is….do it. There is a 30 day money back guarantee on everything Beachbody has. If you think P90X may be a little too intense for you at first, we have other great programs that can ramp you slowly into your fitness journey. Contact me and I will help you decide which direction to go. The main thing though, is ….do SOMETHING!!! Check out my video on beginning my P90X/Beachbody journey!
