If you are going to do anything for any length of time and you are going to be good at it, you are going to have to have Persistence. There is no way around it. It is a necessity. A lot of people go through life and they have made a habit of quitting. They have never had persistence in anything. Quitting will become a habit if you let it. That way, you don’t have to deal with failure. It’s easier to say, “it wasn’t working so I quit” rather than saying, “it’s not going well and I’ve been busting my butt but I know it is going to work out eventually”. Persistence is the key to getting things done. Now, you do have to be careful. I am talking about having persistence in things that are possible. There is also a saying out there that goes something like this: The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. In other words, if you try to jump over your house flat-footed, it probably isn’t going to happen. In fact, I’d go ahead and venture to say that if you have persistence and try jumping over the house 50 times a day, it just isn’t going to happen because it is physically impossible. With a rocket pack, you can make it happen, but on your own, it just ain’t gonna work. So, I’m talking here about something you know is, first of all, possible. Making little changes to move you in the direction of that major goal is a good thing, but it has to be something that is doable first and foremost. It is likely just a matter of persistence to get you to where you need to be.
Persistence is a way of life
I think of persistence as the little bulldog with the sock. He is going to have persistence and hold on until you make him let go. You can pick him up and swing him around your head and he will continue hanging on. Some people call it stubbornness and they are definitely similar. Why do we give up so easily when we have an initial goal just because we hit a little bump? I’ve seen it from my children. They start something and then they realize it is going to be hard to get to where they want to be so they end up giving up. That drives me crazy when they do that so, most of the time, unless they have a really good reason to not want to continue, I make them have persistence and make them finish what they started. It could be an athletic team, a club, a music group or whatever it is. There are so many quotes on persistence out there that you can read and get inspired from, but the bottom line is, to be persistent, it just means simply, don’t give up!! One of my favorite quotes on persistence is this: “My greatest point is my persistence. I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball. My list of matches shows that I have turned a great many so-called irretrievable defeats into victories.” – Bjorn Borg If you ever saw him play tennis, you know he was a fighter. He was going to play as hard as he could to the last ball. He was going to play the last ball of the match like it was the first and everything in between. But, persistence is the key to winning in life. There are so many people that give up when they are on the verge of success and a little persistence will get them over the top and to the finish line. It is ok to get knocked down 7 times, as long as you have persistence and get up 7 times. The time that you don’t get up is when defeat overcomes you. The next time you get up just may be the time you win!!
Persistence is a great emotional tool
When you push through a hard time with persistence, even if you continue to fail, you have a feeling of being a conqueror, someone who overcomes. Bulls are tested in the arena by the number of times they are willing to charge despite the sting of the blade. They are viewed as a good bull if they have persistence. I want people to work for me and are on my team who won’t give up. They know the goal. They know where the finish line is and they are going to fight until they get there. They continue to get up. They continue to charge. When you do that, even though you have small setbacks (and you will if you are going for a big hairy audacious goal) you only smile because you know you are one failure closer to success. In our Beachbody Coaching Business, I tell people, go get 50 nos as fast as you can. Every no is one no closer to a yes. That is the same in every form of sales and even if you are looking for a date for the prom. You may have to go through a few people telling you no, but eventually someone will say yes if you have persistence. Somewhere there is a nerdy little guy with a hot girlfriend because he kept asking hot girls out until finally one said yes. Be that guy with persistence. Have a goal, set your sights on it and Never EVER give up. Quit Quitting!! If you are starting your fitness journey, a new nutrition program (I hate the word diet), a new marriage, a new business, a new relationship, a new anything, you are going to have to have PERSISTENCE to make it work and be good at it. So did a little deeper and get it done. It is not going to happen overnight. One day at a time and you’ll get there. Persistence is the key.
