When you see this picture, do you see a sunrise or a sunset? Is the glass half full or is it half empty? You can come up with your own analogies. Do you have Positive Affirmations in your life? The bottom line is, we all have our own special way of looking at the world. It has been developed over time and by our circumstances. It is also a bit genetic by the way our brain is wired and that is something that can be overcome but only through working at it. When we are young, we all have a view of the world that follows the Polyanna Principle. We always think only the best things can happen and we are always positive. I watch my 5 year old and he has a view of the world that is incredible. He is always running around and laughing. He watched “Despicable Me” and now he is confident we are going to be taking a trip to Super Silly Fun Land soon. It’s amazing how he sees the best in people. He hugs everybody he sees even if he has never met them before. I have often looked at him and wondered why I can’t be more like him. It would be incredible to see the world through his eyes for a few days. I just look at him and I can’t help but wonder what is going on in his head that makes him be so in love with the world. So, what happens to us that changes that in us as we get older? Why do we let life creep in and smack us in the head?
The Positive Attitude Killer
The Positive Attitude Killer is Life. Life Happens. It isn’t fun all of the time. Those huge dreams we have as kids don’t come true. We find out there is no such place as Super Silly Fun Land. Those colleges we apply to deny us. We don’t make the grades we expect to make. The girl you ask to dance at the bar laughs at you. You get turned down from that job. You get laid off. Someone you love gets a severe illness. You don’t get the promotion. You declare bankruptcy. You get foreclosed on. You get the idea. I could go on for DAYS about the rough things life throws at us. It’s even the little day to day stuff that is so irritating it can make you scream. It rains on a day you plan an outdoor activity. You have a flat tire, and your spare is flat. The TV doesn’t record your favorite show. You burn dinner. The kids act up in school and you get a call from the teacher. I mean, just little every day things can get you so down. So, the positive little kid that had all the plans for that incredible life slowly slips from the glass half full kid to the glass half empty kid. The guy that would have seen the picture as a sunrise now sees it as a sunset, or vice versa depending on which one you think is better. The little kid slowly slips into oblivion as life dumps reality and it keeps piling on.
What is Positive Affirmation
Positive Affirmation is simply that. It’s affirming the positive. It is speaking into existence what you want. It is not being Polyanna and tip toeing through the tulips. What it is though is simply looking for the positive things in life. I used to tell my wife “I’m not negative, I’m a realist”. But, I realized the more I thought about it, that I was being negative. Positive Thinking doesn’t mean take your spare tire and throw it away because positive thinking will not make you not have that flat tire. What it WILL do though is allow you to have a great attitude IF/WHEN that flat tire occurs. I heard Zig Ziglar say once that a Positive Attitude won’t help you do everything, but it will help you do everything BETTER!! You won’t be a brain surgeon through positive thinking, but you will be a better brain surgeon with a positive attitude than you will with a negative attitude. So, decide today to have a positive attitude. That comes about by speaking into existence what you want. It is simply writing it down and reading every day, several times a day if need be, what you want to happen. You could write down “I am a great parent and my children love and adore me. My children make good grades. I just got that big promotion at work because I’m irreplaceable. All of my coworkers think I’m great. I now own my own business and it is growing by leaps and bounds”. You write down what you want. Make it positive and make it say what you want your life to be. It could be more time with the kids. It could be more time to pray and read the Bible. It could be more quality time and date nights with your spouse, but write down those positive thoughts and feelings and read them every day and then, make them happen. You can make them as outrageous as you want. Think like a child. Have a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) and be positive about it. Les Brown said “If you shoot for the moon and miss, at least you land amongst the stars.” So, be positive. Have fun. We only have so many trips in our life around the sun. Make each one of them count and I can promise you, if nothing else, the ride will be more fun if you are Positive and have Positive Affirmations every day in your life.
