Positive Affirmations

Why do we need deliberate Positive Affirmations in our life?   Because we are bombarded every day with negative denial (I knew what the opposite of positive was, but I admit I had to look up the opposite of affirmation).  There are so many things that beat us down in life.  Like I said yesterday in Dream Big, we will either build our own dreams or someone will hire us to build theirs.  When we are young, we think we can do anything.  No one has to tell us to have Positive Affirmations.  In fact, there are many kids who jump off of their house thinking they can fly.  We are invincible.  We are constantly telling our kids to not do that, you’ll get hurt.  They don’t see danger like we do.  They haven’t had the “hard lumps of life” like we have.  They don’t understand why it’s dangerous to run around the pool.  We know it’s because they may slip and hit their head.  So, kids grow up hearing “no”, “don’t do that”, “you’ll get hurt” a lot.  A UCLA study done a few years ago determined the average one year old hears the word “no” 400 times a day.   Another study also concluded the average child hears “no” or “don’t” about 148,000 times while growing up.  That is compared with just a few thousand “yes” or “ok”.  Is there any doubt why children “lose the ability to fly”?  We hear no, and don’t, or you can’t do that so much in life that we lose our initiative and our ambition.  We start to believe no, don’t and we can’t do it.  It becomes engrained in our psyche to not even really try anymore.  After all, if you don’t try, you can’t fail right?  So rather than risking being a failure we don’t try.  In order to start to try again, we have to believe we can do it.  We need some good Positive Affirmations in our lives, not just from ourselves but from others.

Surround yourself with People who give you Positive Affirmations

People who give you Positive Affirmations in your life will not be easy to find.  There are a lot more people out there who will give you negative denial.  They want to be the crab in the bucket pulling you down so they can justify what they are doing, or more realistically, what they are not doing.  In other words, there are more well poisoners than well diggers and there are more balloon poppers than balloon bloweruppers (I know that’s not a real word, but you know what I mean).  You are going to have to actively search for people to give you positive affirmations and be intentional about it.  In fact, for the people doing the opposite for you, you may need to have a long talk with them and explain why you want them to start giving you positive affirmations rather than negative denials.  If they won’t, you will need to limit your time around them as much as you can.  You may even want to find some people in your life and make a pact with them that you won’t say anything negative to them or about them at all.   Maybe you can even say, every time I’m around you, you have to tell me 5 things about me that you find good or attractive about me and then you do the same for them.  Like I said, it will have to be intentional if you want to find people to give you positive affirmations.  You are the average of the 5 people you hang around the most.  NEVER forget that.  So, where do you begin?

Personal Positive Affirmations

I remember Zig Ziglar saying once, positive thinking won’t allow you to do everything, BUT, it will allow you to do everything BETTER than negative thinking.  That is something I’ve never forgotten.  It is easy to find negative thinking.  We usually only have to go look in the mirror.  But, if you are going to accomplish great things in your life and really go after your dreams, you are going to have to have a big shift in your thinking.  You are going to have to start seeing yourself the way you WANT others to see you.  Not long ago I had to write my Eulogy for a leadership assignment.  What do you want people to say at your funeral?  What kind of person do you want to be?  That was a difficult assignment but I did it.  The exercise taught me to live my life with intentionality, not just float along waiting for something good to happen and wishing.

So, here is my suggestion.  It works, but you have to be consistent and intentional with your Positive Affirmations.  Go find a 3×5 card.  You can use an 8×11 sheet of paper if you want.  Then, write down your Positive Affirmations about yourself.  It can be something like this….and then, read them every day, several times a day, out loud.

  • I am in the best shape of my life physically.
  • I have my diet and nutrition under control and I no longer crave sweets.
  • I am adored by my children.
  • I make enough money to give to charities I love, save for the future and pay my bills without thinking about them.
  • I have time to do the things I really want to do in life.

Your affirmations can be whatever you want them to be.  The main thing is, stop beating yourself up over stupid stuff and start affirming not only the positive things in your life, but start speaking into existence the things that you WANT!!  Stop telling yourself you can’t and start telling yourself you can and you MUST!!  You can do it.  I’m here to help you if you just contact me.  Beachbody has changed my life and my outlook on life is much better than it was 10 years ago.  Yours can be too.  Positive Affirmations will help you get down that road faster than you thought!!  Contact me and let me help you with your journey!!
