Should Women Lift Weights
In a word, YES! I have heard that question many times since I became a Beachbody Coach but I’ve heard it a lot more since we launched a program called Body Beast. Body Beast is a program that I call Old School Lifting 101. It’s just weights and a bit of cardio. I know it cuts against the grain of what a lot of women want to do and what they think their bodies should look like. I’ve heard, I don’t want to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sagi Kalev. The answer is, you won’t. There are a lot of things that have to come together for someone to get muscles that look like that. It takes HEAVY lifting, eating perfectly, a LOT of testosterone and getting plenty of rest. In other words, to look like a body builder, you have to plan to look like a body builder, you have to train like a body builder and you have to eat like a body builder. In my case, that would mean about 4,000+ calories a day. I don’t think many women would eat that many calories even if they wanted to, especially if they were trying to get into shape. So, let’s explore this misconception a little and answer the question, Should Women Lift Weights?
Why Women Should Lift Weights
We have all seen them. They come into the gym, they hang out for a little bit, they stare into the mirror, from all angles, and eventually, after walking around for a bit, they make their way to the treadmill and elliptical and spend 30 to 45 minutes there and then, they are done with their workout. Either that, or they go into a class and spend 30 to 45 minutes doing squats or jumping around or yoga and then they go home. Tomorrow, they do basically the same thing. The next day, they do the same thing. Now, I’m talking men and women here. By doing that, their bodies plateau and eventually, even if they lose weight, they become what we call “skinny fat”. They are skinny but they have no muscle tone and they may have even lost some muscle in the process, much like a yo yo dieter. Then, when they gain the weight back, they gain back all fat and are actually more unhealthy than when they started. So, in order to avoid the plateau, it is extremely important to have three things involved in fitness. It is imperative to have cardio in order to burn calories and strengthen the heart and cardiovascular system and flexibility is key to staying young and keeping joints limber. Think about an old person. The first word that comes to mind is NOT flexibility. I’ll talk more about those later. The third thing we all need is resistance. By resistance, I’m talking about some type of weight training. That includes body weight exercises like burpees and pushups as well as weight lifting. Weight lifting will add muscle, definition and tone to the body. In addition, muscle burns calories just sitting there. The more muscle you have, the more calories you need every day just to fuel their existence. But the problem is, many women think weight lifting will make them nasty looking and bulky. That simply isn’t true.
What Happens When Women Lift Weights?
They look SEXY. That’s right. SEXY. Think about a runway model. Thin, pale, anorexic, unhealthy. What woman REALLY wants to look like that and why would they want to if they did? There is no fat on their bodies but there is no muscle either. They eat a slice of cheese and an apple every day to look like that and many of them don’t even workout at all. If they do, they hit the treadmill or elliptical. We just had the Olympics this past Summer. Think about the women who competed in the track and field events. Do you want to look like a marathon runner or one of the spinters/hurdlers? I remember sitting here and looking at them and thinking DANG look at those ABS on that woman. They do pushups, situps, and they lift weights AND they run. They also stretch like crazy. In my opinion, of all the athletes, the swimmers and the sprinters have the best looking bodies. By the way, swimming is a form of resistance also. So, don’t worry about bulking up and looking like Arnold or Sagi. It simply won’t happen. Men have about 10 times as much testosterone as women. In order to bulk up with the same weights and training as a man, a woman would have to eat perfectly as I said AND take HUGE testosterone supplements. By just lifting normally, what you will do is build long, lean sexy muscles that burn fat and look GREAT!! And, if you don’t like the muscles, if you quit lifting, they will go away. I promise. So, don’t be afraid. To answer my own question of should women lift weights, again, YES!! If you do P90X, don’t do the lean version, do the classic version. If you do Body Beast, don’t be afraid to lift heavy. The same goes for ChaLEAN Extreme and any of our other programs. My advice is just do it and do it to failure and get those sexy arms and back that look great in tank tops. Developing the pectoral or chest muscles will also give you a natural boob lift. There are so many good reasons for lifting and lifting heavy that I don’t have time to go into them, but the bottom line is, just do it. I’m here for you. CONTACT ME and let’s get you moving to get your some SEXY arms, back, abs and legs for your pool time this summer!! I will help you pick the program that is right for you.
